This post really stems out of my jealousy that I don't get to do a group UL trip in the beautiful Pt. Reyes area with other trail nerds…but man, hurry up and go on that trip already so we can all read the trip report and see the pics! :)

Good job everyone! I have heard from all that will be attending that needed to give their vehicle information for the permit. Thanks so much! Off to a great start. See everyone next weekend. Rain or shine.

For those listed on the second camping site: Cameron Kennedy (are you carpooling with Jay, etc.?), Lisa Frugoli, and Shiela +1…I will need car info at the TH. Hike starts at 9am. Please be on time for me to record you car information.

For those on the waiting list. You are all going since Roger Alsborg picked up a cancelled site. If you are carpooling with a hiker on the confirmed list then there is no need for car info. If you are driving, then please pm me your car info so that I can give it to Roger please.

Hi guys,

Thanks to some cancellations we thankfully got bumped up the main list, and just catching up on the new posts as somehow I didn't get alerts for all the recent ones of the last few weeks (happens sometimes, no idea why).

I just skimmed some of the recent posts but will read them all and check out the wiki. In the meantime:

-Looks like heavy rains all week through Friday. We're getting poured on and can't be much difference 1 hr 45 min up N. We're on even if we're building an ark, right?

-Saw Tony mention charcoal – are we doing a group fire pit? If so, we can help carry in charcoal. I'll just stick it in Andrea's pack, she'll never know ; )

-Would anyone like to carpool with us?

We'd be leaving from Palo Alto, and are less than 2 blocks from the California Avenue Caltrain station and a block from the Stanford U. shuttle. We've got a snow-eating, rain-piercing, road-hugging AWD Subaru Outback 6 cylinder, with a big Thule 17 cu. ft. roof box for extra gear if necessary (doubt needed) and front and rear laser canons (just in case).

There's very comfy room for 2 in the back, and possibly a third depending on how much everyone wants to spread out in the back. Also have an MP3 stereo hookup and we're democratic with the radio – no forced listening. Cookies served.

-Does anyone need our vehicle info?

-Are we bringing a group tarp for meal shelter?

-When are we planning on hiking in? Probably answered above, I'll read all the posts.

-I'll be bringing a mini Xacti video camera, so there will be trip video as well as pictures.

So Andrea and I are set in every way, except for 2 major items:
-Sleeping bag
-Sleeping pad

Sold our old Prolite pads recently and we're planning on ordering a Stephenson DAM 60 and/or 60/64 asap, but can't place an order until we sell a bunch of gear in the next two weeks. We don't intend to get another 3 season pad on top of this for now – we'll use the Stephenson 4 season for now supplemented by our Gossamer Gear 60 in. 3/8 pads in winter. We may be able to borrow Downmat pads or other pads, don't know yet.

Also, we were planning on ordering quality down sleeping bags or closed-back down quilts (we're side sleepers and sprawlers), but hadn't finished researching the options, and again, can't pick up until we sell a bunch of gear in the next two weeks.

We do have a very warm wind-shedding double wall shelter (Hilleberg Allak), an old LL Bean summer double bag (sheet on bottom, all insulation is on top, probably rated 50F) which we've used car camping in summer and sometimes as extra blanket for house guests, plus very warm winter layers which together could be enough. Warm layers include:

-Merino base top and bottom (micro or midweight)
-R1 Hoody top
-Montbell Hooded Synthetic Thermawrap or heavier Patagonia hooded DAS Parka (if used for sleep with LL Bean bag would take DAS)
-Patagonia Ready Mix softshell jacket or Montbell Peak rain jacket.
-Softshell pants
-Patagonia Puff insulation pants (again, if using with light LL Bean bag, would take these)
-Warm hats, light balaclavas and gloves.

1) What do you think? Can we get away comfortably with the warm layers + very light LL Bean double bag? I would think so.

I'll try anything, but Andrea favors less experimentation and more dry + warm. And if she's dry and warm, I get to live and camp another day.

2) If not, does anyone have old extra sleeping bags they could lend us which we could use our sleeping bag liners with?

3) Does anyone have pads of any kind to lend?

We'll gladly carry in what you can spare.

[Mooching may be the ultimate UL system if others carry the items in for you – been there done that with friends who were never prepared]

EJ,

You probably want to PM Ken Thompson, I believe that he needed License Plate number to give to the rangers and specify which trail head you are going to come in at.

Everyone,

I bought a 18 lb bag of Kingsford regular charcoal and will bring as much as I can reasonably carry. If someone can bring some of the quick lighting kind that does not need lighter fluid, I can toss what I have on top of it…..the bag says that the Original is long lasting/burning.

I am traveling with Cameron, Jay, and Jeremy…they may be able to carry some charcoal in too.

A group tarp would be great, but the problem that I see is that there are no trees for rigging a tarp, which means that poles for a group tarp would be needed.

My suggestion is that if there is a possibility of heavy rain, we might want to arrange our shelters in a circle. Worst case, we all retire to our shelters and can chat with each other in a circle.

I think that people are meeting at the trails heads (there are two of them) at 9am.

Jay, Jeremy, Cameron, and I will be arriving late at around 1pm to the trail head.

Unfortunately, this means that I will be missing out on taking photos of the trip with everyone on the hike in.

Cool about the video….maybe we can incorporate links of the video to the trip report to follow

Speaking of which, to make this easier/faster on the trip report, I am going to start posting photos pretty quickly once the trip is done.

I will just number each phone #1, #2, #3, etch.

I would then request for people in the shots to PM me which photo #1 they wanted to comment on or to provide me their names, what gear is in the shot, etc to me…then I can cut and paste it into the trip report to replace the photo number.

That way, I won't screw up names, gear, etc…..plus, less work for me. :)

As it is, I am buried in a monster trip report now.

-Tony

EJ I have an Pacific Outdoor Ether Thermo6 reg 20"x72"x2.5" mummy shape insulated mat that you can use. You just have to blow it up, I really love this matt, but my daughter uses this one now, but she won't be going on this trip so its all yours if you want to use it. Let me know. Jack P.S. I might have a bag also.

Tony what I was thinking for a tarp is what if we took a tarp with a hiking pole and put it over one of the tables I think I saw a table in your last report. Take the hiking pole put it in the center of the table extend as high as possible and guy out the ends, and if the ends are not high enough we could use hiking poles on the corners kind of like staking out a regular tarp if that makes any sense. I can get one of those big blue tarps and carry it in. Let me know what you guys think. Jack

You are welcome to borrow my WM versalite if you like though it's a bit warm for this trip. On the pad front you would be welcome to borrow any of my families extra pads. Right now that would be a BA insulated aircore full length mummy, PO insulated air matress full length mummy, a thermarest prolite3 full length, and/or a BA clearview 3/4 length.

Sounds like we will be carpooling… so handoff would be easy.

Just added a For Sale/Trade section at bottom of trip wiki. This is a great time for gear to change hands live. I just posted 2 items, an Exos 46 Large and Medium new with tags.

Hi all, we just lost power again (2nd day in a row) along with all the businesses next to us and Stanford U today as well. On limited batt power and ev-do connection now. Once we're settled working from a place with power, will respond to more messages.

So apparently yesterday's main circuit breaker going was a prelude to today, when main transformer 20 feet from our box went and took out whole neighborhood. May not be back until late tonight or tomorrow. Should have steady internet access tonight from outside location and respond to PMs.

Back to PMs shortly, thank you for all the wonderfully kind and generous offers to share sleeping bags and pads – can't thank you all enough. This is a pretty amazing group.

8 City electrical workers, 1 crew lead, 2 large trucks, 1 small truck and yet never more than 2 crew members working at any time on the transformer.

EJ Welcome to CA. and your tax dollars hard at work. We got a lot of rain and flooding today. I saw 2 large pump trucks and 2 1 1/2 ton trucks with about 8 workers standing around, and only one guy actullaly pumping the water out of the plugged gutter drain, every body else was to busy holding up shovels. Currently we're forecast for a break in the weather on Saturday. However, even assuming that holds, we'll be walking through, and camping on, pure mud. So ultralight shoes or not, we'll likely be lugging a few extra pounds on the feet.

Lightweight gaiters probably a very good idea.

Would have been a nice public service to shoot a video of the electrical repair work and post it to Youtube, but we have no desire to have our power sabotaged by 8 people who know how to do it.
