I'm bringing rain pants and jacket. Not UL, but it's what I have.
Maybe an umbrella, too.
Being this close to the shore with rain possible on Saturday night/Sunday morning I'd bring at least a jacket.
This is a short walk – you won't be lugging the weight very far.
I plan on bringing my heavy REI rain jacket and pants.
Thermawrap Synthetic jacket and pants too.
Given how damp it might be, I would go with synthetic insulated clothing vs. down.
Last year, it was a bit breezy and not having insulated pants made for a chilly evening on my legs.
With a hike that is relatively short, I am not too concerned about weight.
Then again, I might be carrying in 5 to 10 lbs of charcoal too. :)

Tony the trooper with the charcoal!
I reccomend that everyone have some kind of rain protection. Should always be part of your kit.
+1 Tony on the pants for camp – either puff insulation or rain shell with warm fleece or merino underneath.
Also should go without saying a sit pad, or sleep pad you can use as sit pad.
well its gonna be a heck of a trip, cant wait to meet everyone, as far as charcoal, let me know if I should still bring some, I see tony is bringing some, I can too if its needed… checked the weather, looks good for sat, sunday may have a little rain, Im bringing REI mts thermals, thermawrap jacket marmot vest, and sierra designs rain wear, and jameson irish whiskey hopefully I'm warm enough LOL
Im sure this thread will be pretty active today, so I'll be checking back periodically
see you all on the trail… :)
Jesse, if you'd like to bring a small bag of charcoal that would be cool. As for sitting, there are picnic benches at each site and a locker to store food. Also there is a fire pit for BBQ. Not the wilderness experience that you get in the Sierra's but what the hey, it is better than nothing.
I am also open to talking to anybody about doing a summer trip of 4-5 days. High Sierra stuff with some cross country and high elevation 9-12,000 feet, east side Sierra stuff. If there is anybody interested chat with me. Though it will be hard to get some good face time as I surely will be talking it up with everyone………….
I was just talking with a friend, trying to plan a trip in the high country, I would defiantly be interested!
so tony is bringing charcoal and so will I (matchlight) not sure if im riding with david or driving myself, if I drive, look for the grey toyota truck with charcoal on the roof and bring your trash bag (you are bringing something for trash right? ;) say hello, and fill up!
Last year we all met as a group at the Bear Valley Visitor Center. I like this idea. I still need Lisa Frugoli to give me your car info, or please make sure you give it to me when we're at the Bear Valley Visitor Center
Just clocked the miles and it is almost 6 miles from The Visitor Center to Wildcat Camp. Some elevation gain to get over the ridge. I am not sure how much, maybe 500 feet???
> not bringing rain gear? anyone else?
I will bring rain gear. (1) I don't trust that we will leave before rain hits. (2) Pt Reyes tends to be windy. It will be cool enough, especially when standing around that a rain shell can double as a wind shell without causing overheating
Actually, I am likely to deviate from my normal practice and bring rain pants because I expect the ground to be saturated and might want to kneel or sit down without a sit pad and stay mostly dry.
> down or synthetic
my standard kit is a wm flash vest… that's what I will take provided I can find it. A family member might have "borrowed it" for the weekend.

Note that the weather prediction has regressed — at the moment it is for 40% chance of showers on Sunday. Monday is 70% chance of rain. The forecast getting worse makes me wonder whether the incoming weather might not be coming a tad faster than earlier thought.

I am bringing the normal charcoal….long burning, so the bag says.
If someone has the matchlight or stuff that lights up quick, we can use it to get the ones that I have lite up.
Otherwise, someone bring extra alcohol, gas, or fire starting material to get this thing going.
We are going to need it!
Also, we might want to think about using the inside of the food storage box as a windscreen for cooking…..worked great last year.
Looking forward to this…guess I better start packing.

Not to discourage anyone but I spoke to a ranger at Point Reyes and there is a 20% chance of showers on Saturday.
A gamble for someone like me with a 7 1/2hr drive from Orange County.

Henry Coe State Park
Mid-March
Roger,
With a 7.5 hr drive to get up here, I would not blame you if you did not want to come and chance it to get stuck in the rain.
Maybe you are better off holding off for one of the BPL gatherings that is in the spring time?
Still, I plan on having fun rain or shine.
Then again, I think that I enjoy suffering. :)
-Tony
Tony,
Here I sit in my living room with my backpack gear scattered across the living room floor listening to the rain outside.
I've been struggling whether to stay or go…
It would be great to meet up with you and the other BPL members saturday and go for a walk and share stories.
The only thing stopping me is the combination of this crazy weather we’ve been experiencing and the driving time / distance: 7hrs 21min / 447miles to the trail head.
If only Point Reyes National Park were closer to my backyard then rain or shine I’d be there and afterwards invite everyone over for some cold beers and barbeque.
But common sense tells me there will come another time and till then I hope the weather will give you guys a break.
Have Fun,
Roger
Roger,
Think of it this way…if you are going to drive so far up to see us, might as well make darn sure that it is long weekend vs. an over night trip.
I have to admit, I would not drive that for for just one night.
As I look at my pack, it clocks in at 29 lbs.
So much for light weight.
I think that 9 to 10 lbs of it is charcoal.
Not sure a Jam2 is supposed to carry that must weight, but what the hell.
When this is done, I will get some photos posted up and you can see what happened.
Or you can read about us all getting hit by lightening in a rain storm. :)

Lane, I lost your phone number and address. Please call me. If you don't have my phone number call Cary.
Well Cary got ahold of Lane so all was good. The hike was nearly rain free and the temp. were very pleasant. Nice to see 29 folks getting their groove on in Point Reyes on a Sat. night. Thankfully I did not dance in my Gossamer Gear rain chaps sans underwear on the picnic table! Each and everyone one of you that attended were absolutely wonderful!!!!!
Fun trip. Great to see/meet everyone. Cameron igniting the food storage box with his home brew stove fuel and melting a hole in his caldera cone was my personal favorite highlight.

We have the photos Roger. As soon as Tony sorts them out we will all get to see the fire
