Golite Hooded Inferno Jacket (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008) - 1

This 800-fill down insulated parka, available in fall 2008, is made with recycled shell and inner fabric. Outer shell fabric is 40 denier polyester with DWR. The feature set includes an attached contoured hood, Velcro adjustable cuffs, interior chest pocket, two hand warmer pockets, fleece-lined collar, and drawcord hem. The fit is relaxed, so it can be layered over other clothing. The weight is 1 pound 9 ounces, and MSRP is $275. It’s available in unixex sizes S to XXL.

We chose the Hooded Inferno Jacket because of its high warmth to weight ratio and essential feature set for winter camping. We need a really warm parka for the expected zero degree temperatures expected on Bob’s trip, and to extend the temperature range of his sleeping bag.

Snowballs (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008) - 1

For Bob’s personal hygiene, I wanted to keep things simple, light, and inexpensive as the total price of the rest of his gear is starting to look scary.

My choice: Snowballs!

It’s the perfect product for the ultralight winter backpacker. With a bit of ingenuity, Bob can use it to replace toilet paper as explained in vivid detail in Mike Clelland’s Toilet Paper Free expeditions. He can also use it for refreshing “snowball baths” to avoid hiker’s funk. It might even work as a hand sanitizer, though its anti-bacterial efficacy has yet to be approved by the EPA (or his hiking companions). Finally, Bob can build a windscreen out of them to protect his stove from wind while cooking and use one to scrub out his pot when he’s done with his meals. Available for one billion years. Cost: zero. Pack weight: zero.

Big Sky International Shadow Backpack (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008)

This first lightweight backpack from Big Sky seems to be very well thought out, and has some unique features.

Overview

That’s right, a backpack from Big Sky International. The new Shadow Pack, available in spring 2008, is a 4000 cubic inch (65 L) internal frame pack weighing just 2 pounds 15 ounces. The distinctive features that set it apart (besides its light weight) are its durable Dimension Polyant VX21 fabric, top and panel access, and well-padded suspension system. The full feature set is listed below.

big-sky-products-shadow-backpack-orwm08-1
Big Sky’s new Shadow backpack hits the sweet spot for lightweight backpacking with a simple internal frame (two vertical aluminum stays) and 4000 cubic inch volume. The fabric is Dimension Polyant VX21, which is very durable. The backpanel side (right) of the pack shows its well padded suspension system and optional hipbelt pouch. The hipbelt is a full 5.5 inches high and well padded; shoulder straps are 3 inches wide.

The Dimension Polyant VX21 used is a sophisticated three-layer fabric, consisting of a strong abrasion-resistant nylon face fabric, a diamond pattern of reinforcing polyester threads (visible in the pictures), a layer of permanent adhesive, a layer of non-stretch mylar film, another layer of adhesive, and finally a layer of light fabric on the inside surface to protect the mylar film. The outer face has a good DWR treatment as well. The fabric, which weighs 204 grams/square meter, is essentially utterly waterproof, although seams can leak through the needle holes.

Snow Peak GigaPower LI Backpacking Stove (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008)

Virtual Pack: Snow Peak raises the bar for remote canister stoves designed to work with inverted canisters: they have increased power and reduced weight.

This product feature was published in conjunction with the Virtual Pack Project from Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008. Click here for more information about the ORWM 2008 Virtual Pack Project.

Snow Peak GigaPower LI Backpacking Stove (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008) - 1
The new Snow Peak GigaPower LI Backpacking stove is more powerful and lighter than the Metal Crab shown off at Outdoor Retailer Summer Market 2007.

At the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market 2007 we were introduced to the Snow Peak Metal Crab which represents Snow Peak’s first foray into the realm of remote canister stoves. That stove was a direct competitor to the Coleman Xtreme which we consider to be a very fine stove for winter expedition use. However, like the Coleman Xtreme, that version of the Metal Crab was rather heavy at 14.5 oz.

The new version of the LI Backpacking stove has now raised the bar to a new height for remote canister stoves that fully support inverted canisters. The weight has been reduced to 10.4 oz (295 g) and the power output has been raised to 10,000 BTU/hr (2.9 kW). Of course, there are few occasions when you want that much power, but melting snow is one of them.

The LI Backpacking stove has true support for the use of inverted canisters as advocated in our previous articles Selecting a Canister Stove for Cold Weather Backpacking Part I: Stove and Fuel Fundamentals and Selecting a Canister Stove for Cold Weather Backpacking Part II: Commercially Available Canister Stove Systems. This technique allows the LI Backpacking stove to solve the notorious problem of low fuel pressure due to canister cooling and preferential evaporation of propane in the fuel mixture. This stove could make an excellent addition to a backpacker’s winter kit, especially for snow conditions. It is for this reason that we have decided to place this stove in our virtual backpacker’s virtual backpack.

We look forward to reviewing this stove in more detail in the future.

  • MSRP:$159.95
  • Weight: 10.4 oz (295 g)
  • 10,000 BUT/hr (2.9 kW) output.

Virtual Pack Day One Meals (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008) - 1
Backpacker’s Gourmet Dark Chocolate is fudge wrapped in food grade wax with a high melting point. Waterproof and pliable in cold temps, they bill themselves as “weatherproof chocolate.” Also, the wax is pretty, and the fudge is DELICIOUS.

Lunch

Honey Stinger Protein Bar – Dark Chocolate Cherry Almond Pro
Weight (oz): 3.2
MSRP: $2.49

Dinner

Roast Marmot
Weight: about 12 lbs
Roasted using Grandpa’s Fire Fork

Backpacker’s Gourmet Dark Chocolate – Raspberry
Weight (oz): 6.4
MSRP: $9.99

Clif Shot Electrolyte: Hot Apple Cider
Weight (oz): 1.5
MSRP: $1.49

I chose the Honey Stinger Bar for Bob because it was tasty and different. The bar is 25% honey, so the flavor is great, and I wanted him to eat it early in his trip before it froze and broke all his teeth. Also, the 20 g of protein were the shot in the arm Bob needed to stay warm and moving.

The marmot was a clear choice: it arrived to taunt poor Bob and see if there was any more gear for the noshing. Bob was able to take his vengeance and roasted the wretched critter using Grandpa’s Fire Fork by Light My Fire.

The Backpacker’s Chocolate is not only gorgeous, it provided dense, fat-full calories to keep him warm through the night (he doesn’t have a sleeping bag yet!).

He also needed something to clear his palate, and the Clif Shot Cider was one of the only truly palatable drinks I found on the ORWM floor. Hot and comforting, it replenished Bob’s electrolytes without all the bells and whistles (and racing pulse) of an energy drink.

Virtual Pack Day Two Meals (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008) - 1
AlpineAire Foods Leonardo da Fettuccini was a pretty tasty meal, and surprised me by being a vegetarian option. Full of sodium and carbs, it’s a great way to restock after a long day. Also, the marmot probably turned Bob off meat for a while.

Breakfast

AlpineAire Foods: Blueberry Honey Granola
Weight (oz): 6.5 (enough for Bobina!)
MSRP: $4.65

Remainder of Raspberry Chocolate Bar

Lunch

Clif Mojo: Dipped Peanut Butter & Jelly

Honey Stinger Energy Gel – Ginsting

Backpacker’s Gourmet Dark Chocolate – Orange Chili
Weight (oz): 4.7
MSRP: $9.99

Clif Shot Recovery – Hot Chocolate
Weight (oz): 1.5
MSRP: $1.69

If you aren’t into bars and energy gels, you’d go pretty hungry at this OR show – there just isn’t much of a selection. That said, I was pleasantly surprised at the flavor in the AlpenAire Foods Leonardo da Fettuccini. Freeze-dried food can be really bland, really salty, or a weird combination of the two. This meal hit the right high notes while having enough in one pouch to serve two.

The lunch-time Clif Mojo was also tasty: sweet and salty, with enough crunch and heft to be filling. I topped it off with an energy gel because a man (Bob) can’t live on granola alone.

To round out his day, Bob enjoyed the Orange Chili flavored dark chocolate from Backpacker’s Gourmet. To take the edge off the heat (it’s actually mildly spicy), Bob washed it all down with an apres-dinner hot chocolate, conveniently fortified with protein.

Unlike me, Bob doesn’t have braces, so these Clif Shot Bloks are a great choice for a quick shot of energy. With 50 mg of caffeine, these chewy cubes can get a day started or keep it going. They can also pop a bracket off, but hey – these are for Bob!

Breakfast

Ova Easy Dried Eggs
Weight (oz): 4.4 (enough for twelve!)

Clif Shot Bloks: Black Cherry
Weight (oz): 1.7
MSRP: $1.99

Remainder of Orange Chili Chocolate Bar

Lunch

Clif Bar – Blueberry Crisp
Weight (oz): 2.5
MSRP: $1.50

The eggs are a lightweight, protein-rich brekky – but the quantities are ridiculous. They’d have to be decanted into smaller containers to be more efficient. Also, we’ve not actually tasted them…but they are cool, and it’s late.

The Shot Bloks really are a mouthful of chewiness, so I had to be careful. They come in a number of flavors and are pretty much the same composition as a Clif energy gel, with the addition of pectin for a solid set.

The finale of a solid stand-by, the Clif Blueberry Crisp, reflects the fact that I like Clif bars, and while alternatives were definintely present, I never got a chance to try any…so Bob gets to finish strong with 43 g of carbs to power through to the end. Much like us here.

Numa Sport Optics Lo-Pro Sunglasses (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008) - 1
No, this is not Bob, it’s an anonymous BPL staffer pretending to be Bob and showing how the glasses fit.

Numa Sport Optics Lo-Pro Sunglasses (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008) - 2
And this shows a different Numa frame, twisted into a pretzel by one of Bob’s slight mishaps, yet still undamaged. The lenses have been removed.

There were probably fifty vendors displaying sunglasses this year at the show. My final choice was the Lo-Pro from Numa Sport Optics. Their wrap-around style provides excellent UV protection from snow-reflected sun, and their slightly curved temples with a grippy rubber surface allow them to be stowed on the brim of Bob’s cap when not used and still hug his head well enough to stay on should he become startled by wildlife.

But what really sets the Lo-Pro sun-glasses apart from all the other brands I saw was their extremely flexible frame material. The material makes them virtually unbreakable – an especially important consideration in Bob’s case. You can see in the second picture just what you can do with one of the Numa frames – a different one from the first frame. Plus, should Bob still manage to destroy them somehow, Numa provides a low-cost, lifetime replacement guarantee.

Available since Summer, 2007.

Terramar Terramawool Longsleeve Crew Shirt (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008)

Virtual Pack: Terramar Terramawool Longsleeve Crew Shirt. This silk and wool baselayer top should keep Bob comfortable and warm.

Terramar Terramawool Longsleeve Crew Shirt (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008) - 1
Terramar long sleeve base layer crew shirt.

Bob values comfort and the technical benefits that wearing a baselayer piece of clothing bring. While he considered the sleeveless Ibex piece that weighs 3.4 ounces he realized that this was not a summer jaunt so a long sleeve shirt was really what was needed. If that shirt could provide a little additional warmth with the extra softness of silk so much the better. The Terramar Terramawool long sleeve crew shirt fit the bill. With its 2-ply fabric consisting of a silk inner layer and 150g/m2 wool outer layer Bob should feel quite confident and comfortable in this torso baselayer.

Virtual Pack: Steripen Journey

This product feature was published in conjunction with the Virtual Pack Project from Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008. Click here for more information about the ORWM 2008 Virtual Pack Project.

Steripen Journey (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 08)- 1
The Steripen Journey is a user friendly version of the Steripen handheld water purifiers. It has an LCD display which indicates time remaining until the purification process is complete, and can also indicate remaining battery and lamp life. The display gives feedback to the user indicating if the purification process was completed successfully.

I chose the Steripen Journey for Bob’s water purification system because it looks easy to use and frankly I wanted Bob to jump out of his rut and try something new. The Journey is a couple of ounces heavier than the Steripen Adventurer, but has a longer lasting bulb and the new LCD display. Available in April.

Features

  • Approximately 5 ounces
  • Purifies 1 liter of water in 90 seconds
  • Lamp lasts for 10,000 cycles
  • LCD display provides some user friendly features

The Outdoor Research Ninjaclava is warm, comfortable and adjustable to several configurations. Is that Bobina in the Ninjaclava?

I chose the Outdoor Research Ninjaclava because it provides good coverage and weighs only 1.8 ounces. It covers my nose and face and adjusts to many different configurations. In my experience it is comfortable in those varied modes of wear. Available now.

Features

  • 1.8 ounces

Virtual Pack: Keen Growler

This product feature was published in conjunction with the Virtual Pack Project from Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008. Click here for more information about the ORWM 2008 Virtual Pack Project.

Keen Growler (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008) - 1

Although there are a lot of waterproof insulated boots on the market, it is hard to find a model that is truly lightweight. The Keen Growler is one of the lightest available, has a waterproof/breathable liner, 200-gram insulation, and weight of 19.6 ounces/boot (men’s 9).

The original Growler had an eVENT membrane to make it waterproof and Primaloft insulation, but the current model uses proprietary KeenDry waterproof/breathable technology and KeenWarm insulation. The Growler is claimed to be warm down to -20 F, which may be a bit optimistic. Sizes: Men’s 7-14, women’s 5-11. MSRP: $124.99.

We chose the Grower because it uses mostly synthetic materials to minimize weight, its tread provides excellent traction, and its roomy interior provides ample room to wear thick socks.

Big Sky International Convertible 4P (Light 4-Season) and Montana 2P (4-Season) (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008)

Both tents have multiple configurations available. The summer version of the Montana is a two-person double-wall tent that weighs as little as 2 pounds 1.7 ounces and the winter version is just 3 pounds 9.5 ounces!

Overview

Big Sky International makes the lightest double wall tents to be found anywhere. Their Evolution 2P (two person) now weighs as little as 2 pounds 11.5 ounces and has won numerous awards. Now Big Sky is in competition with itself with last summer’s introduction of the Convertible, and now the Montana. While selecting a tent from Big Sky used to be a no-brainer (get the Evolution 2P), the choice has now become more complex.

Convertible 4P

As explained in our dispatch from the summer 2007 Outdoor Retailer Show, the Convertible can be configured as either a three- or four-season tent. The Convertible is a lightweight alternative to a traditional bomber tent, but it will withstand only moderate snow loads, thus the classification “Light 4-Season”. For more details on the design of the Convertible, click on the above link to read our dispatch.

Big Sky Products Convertible 4P and Montana 2P - 1
Big Sky International Convertible 2P (grey, in winter configuration) and 4P (yellow, in summer configuration). Both tents have fly-only, summer, and winter configurations. The fly only and summer configurations use two poles and the winter configuration uses three poles. The winter fly (grey tent) has a snow skirt at the bottom that can be rolled up, and the summer fly (yellow tent in left rear) does not have the snow skirt.

New for spring 2008, the Convertible will be available in a four person version, the Convertible 4P. The tent basically has three configurations (fly-only, summer, winter), and you purchase the components needed for each one. The fly only configuration (46.9 ounces) uses two poles. The summer configuration (4 pounds 4.4 ounces, $400) uses two aluminum poles and has a mesh inner tent and fly without a snow skirt. And the winter configuration (4 pounds 11.7 ounces/$559) uses three poles, has a thin nylon inner tent, and the fly has a snow skirt.

Montana 2P

Would you believe a true four-season, two-person, double wall tent that weighs 3.5 pounds? The Montana is a departure from Big Sky’s “two doors/two vestibules on the sides” design. It uses three lateral poles that slip into sleeves on the fly, but it is not a tunnel tent. Rather, it has a caternary ridgeline, and the poles are shaped so the tent actually has an A-frame shape. The inner tent clips to the fly, and can be left connected so the tent can be erected as a unit – quick and easy. The tent has a vestibule entry at the front with a top vent, and a rear storage vestibule with a top vent.

Big Sky Products Convertible 4P and Montana 2P - 2
The Big Sky International Montana tent in winter configuration (three poles, winter fly with snow skirt, and thin nylon body) weighs 3 pounds 9.5 ounces.

Now, here’s where the convertible status comes in – the Montana also has three configurations – fly only, summer, and winter. The fly-only configuration makes a very nice floorless single wall tent. The Montana really gets remarkable in the lightest version of the summer configuration (two carbon fiber poles, spinnaker fly, mesh body) – it’s a two-person double-wall tent that weighs just 2 pounds, 1.7 ounces; the cost is about $450. And in the winter configuration (three heavy duty aluminum poles, thin nylon body, and fly with snow skirt), the Montana weighs just 3 pounds 9.5 ounces, and costs about $400. The summer Montana will be available in spring 2008, and the winter Montana components will be available in fall 2008.

Big Sky Products Convertible 4P and Montana 2P - 3
The lightest version of the Montana in summer configuration (two carbon fiber poles, spinnaker fly, mesh body) is a two-person double-wall tent that weighs just 2 pounds 1.7 ounces. The cost will be about $450.

The Convertible and Montana are both tents you can build by choosing the components that meet your needs, via Big Sky’s a la carte system. You can purchase components so the same tent can be used in either summer or winter. Many hikers will want only a two-person/three-season tent, so the summer versions of the Evolution 2P, Convertible 2P, and the Montana 2P are the ones to look at. The choice will be difficult. For a roomy base camp tent or family camping tent, the Convertible 4P provides plenty of room and weighs just 4.25 pounds.

Finally, a word about availability. As readers know, Big Sky has a history of being optimistic on availability dates. The new tents are planned for spring 2008 introduction, and we have been told that Big Sky’s “new factory” is much more dependable than the previous one, so we can be hopeful to see the new tents before summer at least.

MontBell UL Down Inner Pants (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008) - 1
The MontBell UL Down Inner Pants are a warm insulating pant at only 6.7 ounces

I chose the MontBell UL Down Inner Pants for extra warmth in Bob’s sleep system and for insulation around camp. The light pants (only 6.7 ounces) have specifications consistent with MontBell’s line of UL Down garments.

GoLite Pinnacle Backpack (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008) - 1

A winter camping backpack needs some extra volume to hold bulky insulated clothing and a warmer sleeping bag. We chose the GoLite Pinnacle because of its light weight (1 pound, 9 ounces), 4400 cubic inch (72 liter) volume, durable 210 denier Dyneema Gridstop fabric, and large capacity front pocket with water-resistant zipper.

The Pinnacle is a frameless backpack, but it will carry a 25 pound load with aplomb. The MSRP is $130 and the pack is currently available.

Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest Deluxe (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008) - 1

Specifications

  Manufacturer Therm-a-Rest
  Weight Manufacturer’s specification: 1 lb 3 oz (540 g)
  Dimensions Manufacturer’s specification: 20″ x 72″ (51 x 183 cm)
  Thickness Manufacturer’s specification: 0.75″ (2 cm)
  R-value Manufacturer’s specification: 3.1
  MSRP US$29.95

I chose the venerable Ridge Rest Deluxe for several reasons:

  • It is rigid enough to also serve as Bob’s pack frame when rolled up inside the pack.
  • It is a single-component, fuss-free piece that doesn’t require complex manipulation with cold hands.
  • It doesn’t need any special care against puncture from sharp objects – a big consideration in Bob’s case.
  • At 72″ (183 cm) long it will keep all of Bob’s legs off the snow – a significant benefit in the snow.
  • Its claimed R-3.1 insulation value will provide adequate warmth for sleeping on snow down to zero degrees when combined with an appropriate sleeping bag and insulated clothing.
  • The combination of length, thickness, R-value, weight and cost is very good compared to most of the competiton.

Outdoor Research Highpoint Cap (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008) - 1

The shell of the new OR Highpoint Cap for Fall 2008 is 30 denier Pertex Endurance water resistant/breathable fabric; the lining is fleece. It has flip out earflaps with side magnetic attachments. And the brim folds up for easy storage in a jacket pocket. The weight is 2.3 ounces (size L). MSRP is $35.

We chose this skypiece not just for it’s easy to locate burnt orange/red color, but also for its light weight, breathable shell, and ease of layering with a liner or balaclava. Sizes M to XL. Available fall 2008.

Montbell Ex Light Down Jacket (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008)

Ex means Extra Light baby! 7-denier shell, 900-fill down, 5.4 ounces – this jacket is a highlight of the show.

Overview

Among the many new and revised insulated garments from Montbell for Fall 2008 is their Ex Light Down Jacket. This one is a standout folks – the shell is 7 denier Ballistic Airlight nylon, the fill is 900-fill power down, and the total weight is (are you ready for this) 5.4 ounces in size men’s medium. We weighed a size men’s large at 5.7 ounces. The jacket has single quilt construction and a full front zip, but no pockets and no hood.

Montbell Ex Light Down Jacket (Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2008) - 1
BPL outdoor icon Mike Martin models the new Montbell Ex Light Down Jacket. Montbell’s new 7-denier Ballistic Airlight nylon shell is the lightest to be found anywhere, and the insulation is 900-fill power down. The women’s model is on the left. Bring it on Montbell; we want more!

We don’t have a full description for Montbell’s new 7 denier shell fabric, but when we get it, we can add it in the attached forum. In comparison to other cutting edge shell fabrics, silnylon is 30 denier, Pertex Quantum is 20 denier, and Montbell’s lightest current fabric is 15 denier Ballistic Airlight. So, the new 7-denier shell fabric is half the fiber diameter of the previous standard. I also want to mention that their Ballistic Airlight is usually calendared on one side to give it extra strength, has a very soft hand, and has an excellent DWR finish.

For me, it’s truly a pleasure to see and write up a break through product like this. Its exactly what we want to see more of, and Montbell has emerged as a distinct trend setter in lightweight insulated clothing. Now we would like to see their 7 denier shell fabric and 900 fill down migrate into some of their sleeping bags!
