Stopped by the local fine dining and gas station to pick up a couple bottles of Gatorade and nearly had a heart attack when I saw that my beloved water container, the 32oz Gatorade bottle, has been replaced by a new 28 oz one.

In a panic, I drove from store to store to see if the quart sized bottle has been discontinued entirely. Looks like some stores carry the 28oz bottle while others carry the 32oz version. I can only assume the worst that Gatorade will eventually reduce the size of all quart sized bottles to 28oz in an attempt to free up more cash to fund nefarious projects like Chem-Trails and such.

The only thing a rational person can do at this point is hoard, hoard, hoard.

.Gatorade

(Commie 28oz bottle on the left and freedom-loving 32oz on the right)

How 'bout the 32oz poweraide bottles. Plenty of those in the system, at least for now.

How is it "commie" for a corporation to decrease the quantity of product sold for the same price to increase profits? Sounds very ferengi to me, very capitalist… I wonder what the 32 oz bottles will go for in a few years on eBay? 30 dollars? Maybe I should buy a few pallets, lol!

Yes Jimmie. For now.

Kate,

Easy. If I don't like it, then it's commie.

This reminds me of when Aquafina bottles went from semi-wide-mouth to the pop-bottle-sized screw caps of today. The wide mouths filled so much easier in the field, washed up better in the dishwasher, and (important for caving) made better bi-driectional water bottles to carry drinking water into the cave and pee going out (and yes, the bottles would get reused and no, cavers are not very picky).

Yes, stock up. But the cheap way to do that is through dumpster-diving at the recycling center.

Starting a post with "Time to panic" and having the first sentence be "I nearly had a heart attack" gave me a bit of an adrenaline rush… Glad this is only about disposable bottles.

Get some platypi. The phthalates leaching from those plastics are rotting your brains!

It's the same price, just as strong as the old bottle, and 4oz lighter. Shouldn't every Ultralight backpacker be grateful to Gatorade for this technological advance that's going to lighten our packs?

The last time I carried a Nalgene was …like 1998.

I've been carrying that smaller Gatorade bottle for a few hundred miles now. I didn't even realize it was smaller until you mentioned it. Had noticed it was easier to get back in the pack side pocket though. Thought it was a shape thing. Now I feel like I was robbed of that additional 4oz of liquid goodness.

You're only mad because the one on the right more closely resembles your own shape, and the one on the left just taunts you about the shape you'll never have…..

While I won't be hour glass shaped, I'm 40 lbs lighter since GGG and still shrinking. Wanna bet I won't dump another 20 by GGG 2015?

If I win, you wear my tutu on a hike and post pictures here at BPL?

PostedAug 3, 2014 at 8:50 pm

I'm impressed! Good for you my friend.

And sure, I'll take your bet and simply trust you to be honest. That's 20 pounds, not 19.5, from what you weigh tomorrow morning, first thing (well, you can pee first).

And the bet doesn't pay until GGG 2015 (you might get down 20 before then, but then you might creep back up…..), or, if there isn't one, then March 1, 2015. Deal?

You'll have to let me know either way, since it's doubtful I'll be at GGG 2015.

Edit to add: and I'll be thrilled if I have to pay up.

I'll post a picture of the number on the scale tomorrow and again the day before the GGG. In Chaff of course.

In all seriousness, I think I might be happy about this. I always found the 32 oz bottle awkward to handle, too tight to reach back and grab/insert easily in the side pockets of my pack. The new shape looks slimmer at the base, with more of a bulge at the top. Might be an easier fit. I'm looking forward to trying it.

That's what you get for carrying water around instead of just drinking straight from the source!

Any reduction in bottle size of any sugary drink is a good thing, no? :)

No Ben

The lack of self control is a bad thing. Being charged the same for less, not good either.

Just went on an overnight with my brother who owns an ARCO gas station, when I panicked inside he was outside. When I came back out before I could say anything he said, "if you want the 1 liter bottles you have to go to the grocery store, Gatorade changed their convenience store bottles a few months ago".

The regular bottles will still be at the grocery store, just not at your local gas station food mart. To his knowledge Powerade bottles still are the same 32oz bottles.

Thought that was funny because it just happened to me last Monday and I kinda freaked out about the missing 175ml

Has anyone weighed the new bottle? Do they feel just as sturdy as the old ones? Powerade bottles were a little lighter but for some reason I liked the old Gatorade ones better.

New bottle feels as sturdy as the old one.

28 fl oz bottle weighs 1.7 oz. 32 fl oz bottle weighs 2 oz.

They seem to have loads of both he 32 oz and 28 oz bottles side by side at one of my local grocery stores today. Are we sure the 32 oz is going to be phased out? Maybe not. But I got myself one of the 64 oz one as well. Never can be too careful after the Aquafina Tiny Opening Massacre. Scarred for life I tell ya!

I have no idea if it'll be phased out or not. Someone mentioned that the convenience stores will transition to 28oz while other stores will carry the 32oz. I can't speak for Gatorade but I suspect they're testing the waters to see if anyone will notice or if it'll turn into a New Coke sized revolt.

If there's any question, I'm on the side with pitchforks and torches if they go 100% to the 28oz bottle.
