Should we BPL members just boycott the site (i.e. looking but not posting) until Bob comes back?

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS BOB GROSS?

WE WANT BOB!

WE WANT BOB!

WE WANT BOB!

I think Ken said that if Bob contacts Ryan they could try to work it out.

All it takes is for BG to be able to see this from a point of view that is not his own, so that he will understand that he was partially at fault. This will be very tough for Bob, and it is possible that he will unable to get his account working. At least Ryan is willing to make an effort to work with him on getting his account working again.

And, the access to the article that start all this was restored so that F members can see it, so at least that change was rolled back.

Seems like BPL is working on repairing issues they created, which is much better than some previous responses to issues.

and that article is…? I'm completely in the dark about how any of this started.

LBND no 18

Paraphrasing the edited out posts nicely, IIRC :
Bob : “you spelled something wrong”
Author: “I used a spell checker.”
Bob : “I believe you, spell checkers dont work”
Ryan: “Be nice. Send corrections to us here”
Bob :”something is spelled incorrectly on the Internet!”

I recall there being a name calling that most likely triggered the deletion. Bob was hot. Rightly so. A proofreading would have avoided the whole thing.

They really should have copy editors. Its not hard. People who are interested would probably do it for free. Like Bob.

I'd do a few a year for free as part of a team.

Maybe they should have people proofread 4-6 articles for a membership (F or MLIFE). Sounds like a win-win to me.

My 2 cents

Sounds like much ado about nothing to me.

Bob has contributed to this community with a lot of valuable info. I would suggest if he got out of line, he's received his spanking and time-out, let him come out of his room now.

Just my humble opinion, but I think the forum is better off with Bob than without him.

If Bob were still around, then no one else would have to be the jerk who points out that "better of" should be "better off."

So the community is better off with rude behavior and a decrease in civility simply because the offending person was knowledgeable???

Yes, the demise of BPL has happened when people are so easily willing to tolerate poor behavior in trade for a little bit of information that could be provided by others.

Sadly, this seems to bear out the theory that the way to garner support from the public is by displays of obnoxious behavior.

The fact that the offending person may have had some valid points does not create an excuse to deliver their message and point of view in a manner that is disrespectable to others.

Don't confuse rudeness for having a personality.

I think it's more of an acknowledgement that everyone has a bad day and a bit of humor at Bob's style of communication.

Blunt, curt, but never malicious. Never hateful or spiteful. That's the –B.G.– I know.
Edit: removed unneeded point.

I often dash off some post during my half hour lunch break. I don't always have time to edit and proofread. I thought that people of good will would excuse my spelling errors. Do we really need to hire editors, or can we just muddle through?

Anyone who's read a transcription of conversations between people will tell you: we don't speak in grammatically correct ways, or even close to that. Our posts are more like moments in a conversation than, say, articles in the New Yorker. Maybe we should just cut ourselves a little slack?

I agree wholeheartedly that comments and feedback should be given some latitude. If I recall correctly, –B.G.– was critical of an article published by Backpackinglight. Authors invest a lot of time and energy to collect the raw information, included graphics to support their story. For these articles, it would be great to have some volunteers proof the documents. Cleaning up grammatical errors would help improve the author's intent to communicate a good story. My 2 cents.

Standing offer: I will assist in the cleaning up of the English if you wish.

I would gladly do the same. Though honestly, I wouldn't want to do it for free. This is a commercial site, not a freely-associating community, as this whole BG mess had made abundantly clear.

So… still no official word from the admins about what happened to Bob's account? Or did I just miss it?

Ken Thompson BPL Member

From what I understand Ryan is waiting for Bob to send him an e mail that will never be sent by Bob.

PostedJul 3, 2015 at 6:45 pm

Ken T. et al….

Question- was Bob Gross a paid life member here at the time of his account's demise?
