As backpackers we are more keenly aware of the effects of global warming than most others, excepting farmers and skiers, perhaps. I’ve backpacked through more burned over forests than I care to. So I’ve been trying to do my part to mitigate my carbon footprint.
This Dec. 29 I will have 17 Sunpower solar PV panels installed on our roof. That will provide our small 1500 sq. ft. home near Las Vegas with enough total yearly kilowatt hour “credits” with our electric company to offset ALL of our yearly use from the grid. Yes, during the torrid summer months we’ll use more than we generate but in fall, winter and spring we’ll produce more than we use and that offsets the high summer months’ use.
Plus in early and late summer we use our evaporative “swamp” cooler instead of air conditioning. At 100 F. outside we can keep the house at 78 F., exhausting the incoming cooled air through ceiling vents which, in turn, cool the attic. Further we have replaced our worn out contractor 10 SEER air conditioning with completely new Lennox 15.5 SEER HVAC system three years ago. That’s more energy savings.
At our advanced geezerhood it seems that we’ll never amortize the $18.000. + cost of the solar array but here’s the math:
2014-15 AVERAGE MONTHLY ELECTRIC BILL.> $121.
2018 AVERAGE MONTHLY BILL (EST. W/HISTORICAL RATE OF INCREASE)> $155.
MONTHLY COST OF 12 YEAR, 1.99 APR SOLAR LOAN.> $143.
So, it would seem that we have “fixed” our main rate (not incl. “grid fee”) and since we’re retired and on a fixed income I hope we have put a lid on the big part of our bill. At least I’ll have salved my conscience a bit regarding my carbon footprint. That and my Prius v wagon and riding a bike for nearby shopping may make a few tons of carbon per year difference.
And that may be about the best I can do until better EV cars come along.
