One thing that has really bugged me for years reading or watching sleeping pad testing being done.
They always seem to test pads with no person sleeping on them, or at least simulated. Even then, never any testing to show back and side sleeping testing on a pad.
A strange observation I made this last year sleeping on my R6.9, on snow. My old REI R3.2 pad is WARMER than the Xtherm when I side sleep and have the pad deflated a little. The Xtherm only shines if I lay on my back with it proper inflated.
After some informal testing, it’s pretty obvious that both my Xlite and Xtherm lose a lot of their R-value when I side sleep, especially with a little air let out. On my back, they are cooking flesh. :)
According to just about every sleeping pad test, I would be laughed out of the room for ever suggesting my old, low-rated REI R3.2 pad is warmer in some use cases. But in real-world, it is indeed warmer.
Some thoughts on why I am experiencing this effect:
– The Xtherm has no lateral air flow control. If the edges of the pad are sticking out in cold air or on cold snow, they are drawing the warm air away or mixing with it freely, since nothing stops it from moving side to side in the pad, only up and down, and front to back.
– When the body is sitting low in the middle of the pad, either due to side sleeping, or lower pressure, any heat it generates will want to move to the highest point in the pad, which is now on the outer edges. The cold air displaces the warm air away from the body since there is nothing stopping the lateral airflow.
– The old REI Flash pad that is 10+ years old, has vertical baffles AND fuzzy insulation. When my body sinks down into it, there is a much longer and more difficult course for the warm air to mix with cold air away from my body. The baffles on the edge do not allow any of their cold air to seep into the center of the pad.
– I noticed a similar coldness from the Nemor Tensor when side sleeping, made even worse I think by the larger size of the pad. Also a pad that uses mylar sheets instead of fuzzy insulation, allowing lots of lateral airflow.
