Hi all

Now I am getting not just 'Reports' about this thread via the button on the Forum page but also direct emails of complaint. Sigh.

I was hoping to leave this thread up as a good example of how not to behave on-line at BPL and that everyone would drop it. It would seem that is not (yet) going to happen. I am disappointed. However, I am pleased that everyone has stayed polite and not resorted to abuse or vulgarities – thank you.

I have several choices: delete the entire thread, move the entire thread to chaff, delete just some of the postings, lock the whole thread against further postngs, or do nothing in the hope that everyone will let the thread die. I would prefer the last one.

The gear swap threads must be pretty boring.

My vote is to move it to chaff. No need to censor or stop the conversation, but it doesn't belong in this particular subforum.

If it's in chaff I can still popcorn while reading. Though there's usually other stuff for that.

Personally I prefer my chaff stay more on topic — I know, wishful thinking.

I'd like to go back to the genesis of this thread and then maybe it can redeem itself.

The most important thing to do when hiking solo is to leave an itinerary with someone in case you get hurt. Include (in detail) every trail you're going to be on. It's obviously not like when someone else is with you and they can go for help.

To ward off the loneliness around camp I bring along a 2.1 oz AM/FM radio.

As someone else noted on this thread, you can go at your own pace when you're alone. It's good to have a hiking partner, but it has to be someone who can keep up with you.

I used to do that. But found that I often change plans in the middle of the trip, go off trail, take different trails, longer trips, shorter trips than planned all depending on the weather and how I feel on any particular day.

Of course, wrong information could actually delay a rescue due to searching the wrong trails.

Now I just tell someone which trail head I am starting on and maybe which trail head I am coming out and only a very general description of the areas I will be in.
But in addition to that I talk a PLB… that's the best because if you're on an 8 day trip and you get hurt on the 2nd day it's another 6 days until someone might call for a rescue… maybe more. With a PLB you will get a signal out the same day and they should be looking very near your location the next day.

Good points you make Billy. Sometimes I do actually get off onto trails that aren't on my itinerary, and I worry when I do.

I was glad to see your post on this thread last night saying that you were entertained by the chatter going on. I saw it as a good healthy exchange of ideas, but obviously some people didn't see it that way.

What I can't understand is why anyone responds to posts that are clearly meant for shock value and clearly meant to get a rise out of people. I just ignore them.

I guess for many last night this thread was kind of like a bad car crash out on the interstate…you know it's horrible, but you just can't help looking at it as you drive by. Say what you want, this thread sure got a lot of action last night.

Threads can be looked at like television shows: If you don't like it just switch the channel. I don't think censorship will be happening anytime soon on BPL because if it does BPL is done!

It's an annual BPL ritual, Monte. You live where the sun always shines, but many of us get seasonally disaffected, and when someone like the current troll invariably shows up, the fun begins. It's a blood sport that admittedly belongs in CHAFF, and hopefully Roger will move it there instead of shutting it down. ;0))

Tom, I appreciate your insight. I guess I can see what you mean. I was just trying to learn something. I suppose everyone would have to be in solidarity in order to shut down a troll.

I havn't seen much of Chaff, but maybe that's where the contentious discussions take place. Maybe that's where I belong because I don't mind if someone disagrees with me. I just want a lighter pack. I would make a deal with the Devil himself if he could make me lighter.

It's hard to see much of chaff since its like looking down a long, narrow alley on dark and cold night. Cat eyes or night vision goggles help, but even then…

Obviously I'm fairly new to BPL. I clicked over to Chaff and it looks really boring. Perhaps it's like Lucifer getting thrown into Hades for letting his Pride get the better of him.

It's in one of the quiet phases right now, but it's been much um… livelier in the past, or "chaffier" is perhaps a better way of saying it.
