Chances are that's all Casey will be wearing if we stray too close to any depth of water.
…if that
Ken,
What program did you use to build the elevation profile? My wife has seen these graphs elsewhere and keeps asking me how to make one. TIA
David
I did that with my Topo! program. Once you draw out your route you will be prompted to make one.
Has anyone ever actually seen a rattlesnake on the Lost Coast?
Yes. Don't put your hands and feet in where you can't see. Raccoons are the big pest out there.
There could be snakes in the water….
I am terrified at the turn these posts are taking…
Don't worry about it. Besides, rattlesnakes don't eat very much.
–B.G.–
Forget the snakes. I'd be more worried about the candirú fish said to inhabit the waters on the Lost Coast Loop……
Nice use of diacritical marks.
Under Armor really should expand their line to fully embrace the implications of the name.
I've e mailed you a profile and a route map.
Thanks for all your work, Ken. We'll get everything sorted this week.

Ken, Is this our starting point?
That shot is taken up at Windy Point. We start at the Mattole trailhead just down the hill from there. We start off hiking between the base of that hill and the dunes.
Looks like pretty constant rain out there from now through the end of the extended forecast on the 17th. Creeks will be high. Hopefully we catch a break of good weather between systems. Has been really nice here when not raining, blowing, freezing.
Expected highs in the lower to mid 60's with lows around 50. Pretty short thermometer. So far it looks like a chance of rain on Sunday.
Anybody else find it strange that weather.com is forecasting snow showers for shelter cove next monday?
I'm getting
Partly cloudy. High of 48F. Winds less than 5 mph.
Though anything is possible.
Here's the route except for the portion from trailhead to about 1/4 mile north of the lighthouse

How was it? Did you guys get poured on?
Dude. It not the 23rd yet. Had we gone, we would have been soaked for sure. Still might.
A person at the Arcata BLM field office just told me that they rent Garcia bear canisters which weigh 4.2 pounds ( that sounds ridiculously heavy for backpacking! ). This sounds too heavy for Garcia's current model, maybe these are pre-812 canisters?
I just contacted Bearboxer to see if I could get a canister shipped in time for the trip, waiting on a reply.
I can buy a Bearvault locally. What other options should I consider given the limited time frame?
You'll be happy with a Bare boxer. They rent the 812 at the BLM. Too big for an overnight/ 2 days. I'll e mail the others and see if they might have a spare amongst them.
We will or we won't and that is just how you play this game. We won't die from it and we won't be out long enough to really suffer.
I am confident that we are prepared to stay warm and safe enough.
