James, do you still have the PDF? If so, would you be willing to email it to me (antbach at snet.net). Thanks!

Yes, those are exactly the PDF's Rab sent me.

Still puzzled about the line in the Summit Alpine PDF which says:

"Based [sic] filled with superior quality European duck down fill power 560+"

Can anyone figure out why they would have used duck down, as opposed to goose down? I suppose it's cheaper, but usually I think Rab would be aiming pretty high, particularly in a lightweight, high performance bag

After much deliberation I've pulled the trigger on the Summit 15* bag and also got a few Princeton headlamps coming my way.

Will post pictures when i get it ( 7-14 days !!!)

Did the same thing Yuki. I had planned on getting a Marmot Pinnacle for this fall, but with the combination of discounts, I was able to get the Rab Summit 500, a Backcountry 700ml titanium cup, and a new camp chair for a fraction of the cost of the Pinnacle. It was just too good to pass up. Hope the Rab is worth it!

I grabbed a couple of the Rab Quantum 400 bags — one for myself and one as a gift. For $120/each with the discount, that seems like an incredibly good value for a three-season bag that comes in just under 2lbs.

I would have preferred a bag with the Quantum Endurance exterior, but I just couldn't justify the tradeoff of thinner cut and half-zip. I've used a half-zip bag before and just found that it lacked versatility — if you happen to get a warmer night than expected on the trail, suddenly you're ROASTING because you can't vent the bag all the way.

I wish I could have snagged one of the Rab Quantum Endurance 400 bags, but according to the CSR, they sold the last one just minutes before I checked out (this was a few nights ago). Sad for me; if anyone has one they picked up and don't want, let me know.

But for the price, these seem like an amazing value… maybe not the last sleeping bag I'll ever own, but pretty awesome nonetheless.

I also wanted the Quantum Endurance 400 but they sold out the day i've tried to order. Half length zipper blows, but if the bag is good – i'll keep it as second (colder weather bag) or for use by my wife who generally needs more insulation.

Just received a Quantum Endurance 800, reg. left zip. The size seems just about perfect (I'm 5'9", size 11 feet)–my toes are a comfortable distance from the bottom of the bag, but not too far. The zipper works as well as any other I've used, and better than many, sliding smoothly and reasonably snag free. (Rather than incorporating a wide piece of stiff fabric in the draft tube, as some manufacturers do, Rab has narrow pieces of stiff fabric built into each half of the zipper, to keep the zipper from grabbing the fabric of the bag). The only place where the zipper gets a little difficult is navigating the inbend at the shoulder, because of the bag's tightness there. Reaching across ones chest to pull the zipper up the last few inches makes the tightness more evident.

The down seems good–Rab claims 96/4, which seems about right, as one can't feel any feathers when one squashes the down (which one sometimes can in an 800 fill US bag.) And it probably is equivalent to a US 850 fill, but doesn't seem as "springy", or "alive", as the down used in Katabatic Gears 850 fill, or, even better, the down used by Valandre. Maybe cluster size is smaller.

The Endurance shell is probably good in wet conditions, and the Pertex Quantum inner seems lighter and more compliant than the standard taffeta used by many manufacturers, and feels great.

There seem to be no side block baffles, and it's easy to transfer down to the top of the bag from the bottom, making the bag even warmer.

Agree with a previous poster that the draft block neck tubes could use some kind of velcro or snaps to attach them to each other on the side opposite the adjustment cord. Otherwise, if one tightens down the neck tubes, a hole develops between the lower part of the bag and the head area, on the zipper side of the bag. The zipper and external velcro prevent anything like this from happening when the hood is tightened down, of course; maybe when everything is cinched down, it kind of all mushes satisfactorily together. But optimizing the seal of the volume of the bag below the neck is a reasonably difficult problem–witness the lengths Valandre has gone to with their Shocking Blue.

A bit tight through the shoulders, but not a problem for me, unless I was wearing a jacket I didn't want to compress (or when zipping up or down, see above). Found it comfortable through the waist and legs, maybe could be a little smaller, but fine.

Not as good as a Valandre Shocking Blue, and, if I were paying full price, I'd spend the extra for the Valandre, but, for this price, it's an absolute steal. A great winter bag.

BTW, I opted for the free shipping, and it was amazingly fast.

I just got 3 bags and they are sweet!!!

Does anyone know if there is going to be another $40 off coupon any time soon? I am going to buy a couple more the quantum 250's.

Cheers,

Jeremy.

Jeremy, which of the bags did you get? I'm interested in the Quantum top bag, and wonder if anyone's tried it yet. How much (single-sided) loft, shoulder circumference, etc. Dept. of Goods page lists shoulder circumference as 75 cm, which would be equal to 29.5", obviously not correct.

Hi James,

Indeed I do have one of the cheap quantum top bags. I will take some photos of it in the next couple of days. It doesn't fit me (but was not expecting it to) but would probably fit someone about 6' or maybe a bit shorter. The fit is quite generous as I am 6'2, have an athletic build and quite broad shoulders and don't have too many problems moving around in it.

As for the loft, I saw they rated it down to freezing but I would be quite sceptical, the hood section is super puffy but I would roughly estimate the top section has about 1 – 1.5 inches of loft.

The other bags are sweet, especially the summit 500 which is comfort rated to -10C and weighs only 950g!!

Does anyone else have thoughts about these bags, or specifically the Quantum 800?

I'm looking for a good winter/alpine bag, and try to rotate my gear purchases so I can acquire out-of-season gear at great prices.

I want a Katabatic quilt–-I love supporting cottage, Aaron is a fantastic guy, and their gear is top notch––for the reduced weight and bulk, but the Quantum 800 gives me the security of a bag at some $250 dollars less (also a pound more). What say thee, BPL?

I've just got mine Summit 500 (15*, Quantum Endurance) and it is indded a nice bag. It is a little short for my 6'2" height, but with a good hat it may work.

What I've noticed so far without taking it to the woods:

Good:
– loft is good
– enough space for me inside (6'2" 180lbs)
– shell seems durable
– comes with both sacks
– feels nice and warm

Suspects:
– half length zipper
– zipper does get caught on the inner material. annoying
– my bag doesn't have a hood per se. the end of the bag bunches up into a hood when you tighten the strings.
– with my build – i would like a draft tube at neck/chest level across the body.

Wait for their $40 off coupon and buy one then. At that price – and with the quality of the product – i'm quite sure you will love Quantum 800. If i had any plans to spend time in snow/ice – i would get one of these.

Stephan, note that the first commenter on the Quantum 800 (at http://www.departmentofgoods.com/rab-quantum-800-sleeping-bag-0-degree-down) says that the outer shell is not Pertex Quantum Endurance, but rather Pertex Quantum. Not sure if he's right, but it makes sense, as there was an otherwise identical bag on the site called the Pertex Quantum Endurance 800 (one of which I bought, see review above).

The Endurance fabric is slightly heavier, stiffer, with some kind of breathable water resistant coating, (not Goretex). Marmot has used it for years in their Helium Endurance.

The Quantum 800 probably a great bag, at a great price, though not super light, and not as water resistant as the Quantum Endurance 800.

Also, the Rab bags completely apples-to-oranges compared to the Katabatic quilts–they're both great, but the equivalent warmth in a Katabatic will be much lighter, take a bit more care to use properly, ultimately more flexible, but less fault-proof.

I think the Quantum 400 another good bag to consider, especially for the price, but again, may not have an Endurance shell. (Similarly, there was a Quantum Endurance 400; all the Endurance bags seem to be gone.)

Full zips on both the Quantum Endurance 800 and the Quantum Endurance 400.

So I got in my Rab Summit Alpine 500 today and since there have been so many questions on these bags, I thought I'd post my initial thoughts. First off, the bag has great loft and is very lightweight (sorry, no scale). The weight comes with some trade-offs that I'm hoping won't pose an issue when I actually get a chance to use it:

1. No draft collar. We'll see if the snug fit makes up for it??? Not too experienced in colder temps and am gradually pushing my seasons longer. Planning to use this down to about 5-10F. That said, I am a VERY warm sleeper.
2. VERY athletically cut. I'm 5'9" and 170lbs. Not sure I would want to be much bigger in this bag, it's pretty snug on me already. Definitely not for people that like to squirm in their bags or for those that are claustrophobic.
3. This is NOT a half zip. It's more like a 1/3 zip. I was hoping for a little touch longer for venting, but it only comes down to my rib cage when in the bag.
4. Not much of an issue for me since I store my bags flat, but the included storage sack is only about half the size of the one supplied with my Marmot Arete. While not stuffed by any means, it is definitely the snuggest fit I have ever seen in a storage bag.
5. Not an issue, but thought I'd point it out. While some have been reporting these being all yellow, mine was as pictured with a black bottom.

With all of this said, I am very happy with it out of the box and have no complaints considering what how cheap it was with all of the discounts, coupons, and rebates. Looking forward to using it this fall in the Whites.

Here are a couple of pics next to an Arete for reference.

I have the same thoughts as Yuki on this bag. At 6'2 I have to scrunch a tiny bit to fit in but I am only using it for ski camping here and there so can definately deal with this sacrifice for such a sweet bag at such an amazing price. One of the other downers is how ridiculously heavy the stuff sack is for this one (over 100 grams). Despite this little gripe, I am super impressed!

Did anyone here pick up the Quantum Endurance 400? I went with the Summit 500 a couple weeks ago since I'm a cold sleeper, but looking back, I wish I went with the QE 400 and just layered up instead. As this is currently my only bag, the 1/2 zip (More like 1/3 zip like Aaron stated) is going to bug me for warmer weather.

Also with the Summit 500, at the very bottom of the zipper, there's a section that's only the outer shell. Looks like the draft tube was suppose to go further down. Is anyone else's bag like that?
