"Are there any other contestants?"
The contest was announced, but there are no rules announced. That hardly seems fair.

Hey Ken, for those coming in on Sat. What time do you want to list as a starting time?
Bob, would you like to submit some rules. I don't think it fair that the contestants make their own rules. I myself have no real interest in cooking on a little woodstove. So I don't know where to begin. You have made steady remarks about the contest. Want to help?
Jay, how do you want to do this ? I propose our contest is to heat 450 grams of water from the drain valve of a cooler to boil.
1) we bring our own stove and pan.
2) we prepare our own tinder and wood, on site or in advance.
3) Ready. Set. Go start.
4) "I got boil", lift lid, show boil, win,
5) people that want to measure relative stove efficiency can do so separate from the race to boil.
This will be try number one for rules. Or Woodburning Rules!
1. LeMans Class: competitors run into the woods, gather twigs, return to their stove and cook pot equipment, light their fire without lighters or matches, and try to boil 16 ounces of cold water. The water is at ambient temperature and supplied by the judge. First one to boil wins.
2. Unlimited Class: no running start, and the judge supplies common wood fuel to all competitors (likely unlimited 1/4" dry pine dowel rods cut into 2" lengths). Competitors light their stoves with any tool (but only for lighting it). Same water as above. First to boil wins.
===============
We do not have an exact mark for what constitutes "boiling." It is virtually impossible to put a temperature probe into a cook pot and get an indication out. Some lids have no vent hole or a very small vent hole, so wires and probes won't fit through. A wireless probe is a nice thought, but there would be problems getting the RF signal out of a closed metal container. It might have to be some indication based on intense steam escaping.
That's a start.

I like Bob's idea's!
Seems familiar..
Re: Burnout contest on 12/30/2010 06:20:45 MST
Two stage contest. Stage one. Le Mans start. To test skill of the operator. Timer started then contestant goes off and finds wood, builds fire, boils. Stage two- Competing stoves to be ignited at same time using an allotment of "competition" grade wood. Any other aspects should we add?
Every thing sounds great Cameron–I like the idea of bringing some of our own fuel because of the possibility of rain…If not raining use local twigs and bio mass..
First to boil wins! Simple..Need a ride Cameron?
@ Ken T., I think Kevin S. is going to secure site 12 for us this week.

Why?!? To promote fellowship and to meet other "light minded" people to forge hiking partner alliances.
OK. To get out of the house in the middle of winter to go camping with a great bunch of people. And gear, beer.
We will have support vehicle capability to haul things to Manzanita Point.

We have had a lot of interest prior to Christmas with hikers that want to come. For those that have not RSVP'd please do so, there are still a bunch of folks that have not done so as of today. Also for those that are planning to attend could you please kick in $2 per person for the campsites? Ken and I spent $186 combined to make this even happen.
I live in Riverside, CA and was wondering if someone had room for another hiker in their car.
David, I am not sure how many hikers are coming from So Cal. I know Jack Elliot is coming from Bakersfield, and that there are a few coming from the Central Coast. Hopefully you can get a response. I encourage you to go because not only do you get to look at tons of gear, but it is a fun evening!
Also, aside from Tony being our group photographer as always…..thanks Tony!, I will be taking video. Basically we are going to have a video diary. So be prepared to be interviewed. Ultralighters gone wild!
Ken T., and Ken H. I may have one more coming so you guys can put me down as me +2 I'll be sending some more money to cover it as soon as I know for sure.
@ David Hensly, If I take my wife's car instead of my truck, I will have room for one more, and you're welcome to that spot. I live in Bakersfield Ca. you can email me or call me, my email is
