Have had some discussion on doing the Lost Coast in April. 2 nights at least.Any thoughts or suggestions? Weekend of the 17/18th. Best low tides, new moon
Would like to do a May campout in Humboldt Redwoods State Park also. Semi car camping/family outing type thing
Feb 19, 2010 at 7:24 am #1575798Hey Ken….
The May thing sounds great, sounds like a trip my wife would be up for.
April not sure, but possible. I have something in mind for down here, maybe.
More later……
Feb 19, 2010 at 8:14 am #1575824That sounds good.
Feb 19, 2010 at 11:52 am #1575920April is also a good time for the Rancheria Falls trip, as we did last year.

That is an excellent time and place to field test your rain gear.

I presume you are thinking of playing in the waterfalls … I did not try that. April was a nice time to be there … good water flow with the spring runoff. Very pretty.
As I recall, April is the last time without quotas for the area, so was a good time to go.
Feb 19, 2010 at 12:23 pm #1575940I've been there several times in May or June, and I have never failed to walk up and get a permit. After June, the waterfalls are diminished and weather gets hot. I think the wildflowers are best around June 1-15 on a typical year.

Feb 19, 2010 at 1:44 pm #1575978"as we did last year" I'm trying to get away from making that statement. Too much to see yet.
Feb 21, 2010 at 3:18 pm #1576763well actually last year when we went we did have problems with the walk up way. Normally it has not been a problem but last year we barely were able to accomodate all of us at Rancheria Falls
Feb 22, 2010 at 10:27 am #1577080Ken, Anytime you want to hike/camp there let me know. Jim.
Feb 23, 2010 at 1:39 pm #1577632Has anyone done this area? I've read that it is one of the least visited Calif. wilderness areas.
From Stockton, the S/E corner area, from Maxwell, would be my choice, but, would be interested in trying this area.
I planned a trip last late winter/spring, but a storm came in, so went to Tuolumne County instead.
I have a guide book that recommended it, and the rangers, over the phone, said it is a nice area. They have been clearing the trails from the previous wind storms and fires.
Mar 3, 2010 at 4:56 pm #1581363Shameless self promotion. I missed going last week(sick) and am trying to get out once a month at least.
Mar 10, 2010 at 9:06 pm #1584904About a month away now. 17-18 Lost Coast Any other takers? May is still in the works as well.
Mar 10, 2010 at 9:18 pm #1584913Man, I hate living away from every stinkin' BPL activity.
Mar 10, 2010 at 9:44 pm #1584929im 98% down!

Mar 11, 2010 at 5:46 am #1585017April 17th, lost coast. I'm in.
Mar 14, 2010 at 8:46 am #1586269I'm in.
Mar 14, 2010 at 8:59 am #1586275Do you guys want to do a through, or an out and back? This way I know if we need to shuttle or whatnot. Thanks! If we do a through we need to leave at o' crack thirty Saturday. So we all should be there Friday night. Thinking of getting a spot at A.W. Way county park, it's on the way.
Mar 14, 2010 at 9:25 pm #1586499We should through hike it North to South.
Mar 14, 2010 at 9:54 pm #1586505North to south is always best. Are you guys gonna carpool? Bringing Ocean to the ocean? I had to ask. Great kid, more than welcome.
Mar 14, 2010 at 11:58 pm #1586538I have no preference, but with this many people a "thru" is pretty easily done, so I guess I'm leaning that way…
side note,
we should put together some carpools soon!
thanks ken for for putting this together, its gonna be fun times again, if its like pt. reyes well all be full of good food and drink by nights end… this time we gotta play some cosmic wimpout
Mar 15, 2010 at 6:14 am #1586568Through hike sounds good. I am for carpooling, either drive or pitch in.
Mar 16, 2010 at 2:24 pm #1587190A through it is. I can park at Shelter Cove and hitch back to Garberville if you guys can pick me up on the way to Mattole. No bus service from there unfortunately. Unless someone wants to pick me up at the Black Sands trailhead. We'll figure it out.
