June BPL Hike & Post Apri?????

Looks like I'll be joining y'all.

Just to reiterate, because it hasn't been a topic of discussion lately….everyone is supposed to bring an appetizer/hors d'eouvre? Is dessert okay? And can we get a final headcount so I know how many to bring?

Thanks Denis for the info. The coordinates I have from Google Earth were the ones that I posted. When I type In yours it showes a little more north of a deadend road. Is the TH at a dead end road or where the road loops around,I have the route as 4N26,is this correct?

As I recall, the road dead ends, in a loop, at the parking lot. I was in there once last September and found my way easily enough. If you stop at the Pine Crest Ranger Station to get your permit, they'll give you directions. The road to Crabtree leaves Hwy 108 a few miles west of the Pine Crest turn-off. I remember that the route is signed. Though barely enough. I don't have a Forest Service map and don't know the forest road number.

Road does end with a loop parking lot and campgrounds. Everyone is in charge of their own permit. No quotas so no worries on when you start. I will be hiking in around 11 am or so with my wife. I will bring Bruschetta. Cary if you could be so kind do bring your awesome little grill that would be cool. Dave if you are coming from Chewing Gum Lake you can take a nice cross country route from Y Meadow dam down to Bear Lake I think.

Most of the camprgounds for Bear Lake are on the North side of the lake as you approach it. Better ones are further down to where the inlet of the stream is.
The road to the trailhead starts at the ranger station and does a "V" with a split going to Gianelii and the other to the Crabtree Trailhead.

Nate desert is fine too. Dunno if you can outdo Denis' concoction from the last hike!

Well my wife has a nasty cold and is a game time decision. I could be going alone. Here's to hoping that she does not get me sick!!!

My son and I are still in Ken plus my friend and his son might go,I will know for sure Thur. Any body up for smores? If so let me know, I'll bring some along. Wer'e cutting it kind of close for a head count by this weekend, (whew) any count yet? Is there an age limit on how young the hiker can be? My friends son just turned 5, he did his 1st hike Memorial weekend up to Weaver lake.

age is no problem, just keep in mind that adults will be present too and obviously on BEST behavior

I am coming with the whole family, less the dog!

So it will be my wife, my 6 yr old daughter, and myself.

We are looking to bring crackers hummas and a bean dip.

I also am hoping to have time to bake some cookies to bring along….going to be the pre-made dough type from the store.

If I made them from scratch, people would be sick. :)

This might be a repeat, but how to do you get there from the Bay Area….I am in the East Bay.

Also, it sounds like I will need to stop off at the Ranger Station to get a permit.

I have been up there once before with Jeremy….he drove, so I was kinda brain dead on how we got there.

I do know that we dropped into the Ranger Station to get our permit.

Looking foward to this.

If room in my pack permits, I am going to see about bringing some water guns for kids to play with.

My daughter seems to think that it is funny to chase me around and to get me hosed down with water and turn blue from hypothermia. :)

This trip gives a chance to break in my Rainshadow 2 three person tarptent!

Hwy 580 East to Hwy 99 North. Stay in the right lane because in a 1/4 mile you take Hwy 120/108 East. Hwy 120 and Hwy 108 split in Sonora. Continue east on Hwy 108 into the Sierra's. The ranger station is on Hwy 108 in Pinecrest. The road to the trailhead is at the junction with the ranger station. You will need a permit. Unfortunately I cannot tell you how to get to the trailhead from there. I just know by memory. Ask the rangers how to get to the Crabtree Trailhead. It is real east to figure out. Just make sure that you don't miss the Y in the road that splits Gianelli and Crabtree.

I have been to the trail head before, so I am sure that once I am out there, I will remember how I got there.

Plus the rangers can tell me.

Thanks Tony. Yeah I hope my wife can make it. She is on summer vacation from teaching but has been sick the last two day. Pretty much it will be a Friday night, Saturday morning kind of decision. If not I will be solo

Me and my son are for sure, friend said he's not going to make it. We will be there some time Sat. mornig after we get are permit. Can't wait to start hiking.

Just curious….

I'll be bringing my new bear boxer. This thing is great compared to my old Garcia, 1/2 the size and weight I'm so use to carrying a bear canister I just always use it, plus most of the places I hike its mandatory. Might as well get use to it and use the smallest and lightest that they make

i'm going to sleep with my food bag next to a raging bonfire, but i'm bringing several guns and some dogs (off leash) that like to bark all night – i've also found that defecating next to the tent, but not burying the puup or 2-ply extra cushy charmin, usually keeps the bears away; if not, my cuban cigar smoke will certainly drive them off, but if it doesn't, i'll get the bears into an argument of semantics or global warming (ideally both). as a last resort, i'm bringing one of the birds my cats killed and can throw that at the bear.

Jack I too have a Bear Boxer, with bear scratches to show too. Great little cannister.

Nate, I bring my Ursack when I go there. Cannister's can be overkill there. If you want to hang that is ok
