Mar 8, 2009 at 4:30 pm #1483813i dont have a good feeling about this. i have been away/busy for a while so i was just checking topics of interest these past few weeks. i finally sat down the other night and found this thread. 25+ posts a day, everyday since the 27th, three diff. codes and 11 pages later i finally show up and………nothing.
looks like i pulled my head out just in time to get all excited about this deal only to find out the party ended just as i got home. oh well.
anyway, i would to see another code that works show up but regardless, i had my chance if was more aware. thanks to all those who posted the other codes
Mar 8, 2009 at 7:11 pm #1483849yes i feel the same got one purchase in but have many more to make
Mar 8, 2009 at 7:49 pm #1483865Now if everyone had Twitter just imagine how wonderful things could have been…
Mar 8, 2009 at 11:05 pm #1483912I talked with the people at backcountry over the live chat function on their website and it seems that the code should still operate until 5/30/09 only on items on their outlet site. I have no explanation for why it worked on both sites and did not think it was appropriate to ask.
Mar 8, 2009 at 11:22 pm #1483917Hmmm. Sounds like they had a bug in their online shopping system. Oops. The programmer responsible has got to be feeling pretty sheepish right now…
Mar 9, 2009 at 7:42 am #1483944i tried to buy two pairs of pants (a north face and columbia pair), and yes, technically the code still works, but here's what a chat rep told me:
"Okay that code will not apply to anything that is The North Face brand and it is not applicable on the Columbia pants because they are already discounted at more than 40% off retail (they are 50% off right now)"
so, it'll work on outlet stuff that's not north face and that's not discounted past 40%.
so, still a deal, i guess, but not nearly as good as the one we were enjoying before.
Mar 9, 2009 at 8:35 am #1483953Why are you people talking to chat reps? The full %40 discount still works for some of us. Talking to them is just going to get it shut down quicker.
Mar 9, 2009 at 8:39 am #1483954Have you actually placed an order since it was posted as not working? I thought one of the codes was still working for me because it still showed in my cart but when I attempted to check out it told me it was used the max # of times.
Mar 9, 2009 at 8:41 am #1483955okay. so of course it isn't going to 'work' on an item that is already 40 or 50% off.
It's not 40% the existing markdown. It's 40% the original item price.
no talking to the enemy!
btw, I never thanked the OP for sharing with us. I managed to keep myself from going crazy, luckily most of the stuff I wanted wasn't in stock. I saved like $100 though! YAY!
Mar 9, 2009 at 8:42 am #1483956actually i didn't really save anything.
heh.if this deal never came around, i wouldn't have spent a penny. :-D
Mar 9, 2009 at 8:52 am #1483961A thief is a thief. You are stealing from family's. Why don't you just put a gun in their back and lift their wallet. I'm disgusted All you truly posses in this world is your character and I see very little here. :( Ali
Mar 9, 2009 at 9:14 am #1483969"A thief is a thief."
Boy, if anyone is feeling guilty about buying a Western Mountaineering Megalite size long at the 40% discount, I'll relieve your guilt. You'll never have to look in your gear closet and be reminded of your misdeed again.
Mar 9, 2009 at 9:40 am #1483973"A thief…"?
How can it be stealing from "family's" [sic] if the website offers the discount?
Seems fairly ingenious to me — offer a discount but make people think they are getting a very special, limited-time offer in order to provoke quick sales. Neither party is holding a gun on the other and both sides are happy.
It's coming up on April 15th, so please don't take advantage of any tax write-offs you may have because someone might accuse of you being called a thief.
Mar 9, 2009 at 9:43 am #1483974Ali is referring to the taking advantage of the discount that was never meant to be applied in the manner in which it was used. Let the morality discussion begin.
As for the Internal Revenue Code, those deductions are policy decisions of Congress and the legislature. It's a thrilling read, alright [sarcasm only a law student can dole out].
Mar 9, 2009 at 10:02 am #1483979"Why don't you just put a gun in their back and lift their wallet."
That was the original plan, but in this economy I couldn't afford to get a gun and round trip airfare. I guess we are both better off with the 40% discount. I don't have change my name and run from the law and the folks at backcountry don't have to go to years of grief counseling.

I have no doubt that this code was not used the way it was supposed to. Should anyone feel guilty? I'm sure everyone will find their justifications; it's on them.
The question of where these codes came from has been posed many times in this thread. I'm curious…
…I've yet to see an answer. I think that says ALOT.
So, again, where are the codes coming from?
Mar 9, 2009 at 10:25 am #1483986My guess is the codes are coming from groups, organizations, and clubs that were given 40% off codes to the outlets store.
Mar 9, 2009 at 10:26 am #1483987You can sail from Califonia to Nevada. DUH :)
Mar 9, 2009 at 10:36 am #1483992Craig,
One scenario –Backcountry and many other sites provide these discounts to firefighters, S&R, and other organizations. Then it get distributed outside the group by one of the privilaged.
This happened innocently here last year with NorthernLights Snowshoes. After the code was created it was posted for members, but of course anyone could see it if they were paying attention. Some fancy footwork was needed to salvage the situation.
BTW, I am not one of the privilaged.
Mar 9, 2009 at 10:46 am #1483998Backcountry, and many other retailers, are probably sitting on lots of inventory they'd like to be rid of. They probably also have agreements with manufacturers (like WM) that restrict their ability to offer discounts.
But if, by mistake, a code is mysteriously leaked, Wala, and a bunch of people buy stuff, problem solved.
Mar 9, 2009 at 10:57 am #1484004Good point james. Have you ever considered running for president? This country needs more brilliant minds just like you. Ali :)
Mar 9, 2009 at 1:07 pm #1484037the latest code is not working in the oultet checkout even on outlet items under 40% off
