Being the daughter’s first car I would assume that Ian would be buying used as the life expectancy for that vehicle would probably be short considering what paint and body work costs these days. I would say the same if was the son’s first car, so no commentary on women drivers. Plenty of decent used cars for 8k or less.

We bought Amy a Ford Taurus back in 2012 for many of the reasons Nick mentioned. Â The poor car has been through hell and back but is still running like a champ.
Ken,
It’s hard to predict.  My sister and I drove our first cars without getting into a fender bender.  My brother totaled his first car before he received a proper driver’s license.  We’re looking for a car that’s new enough to have ABS and air bags, but has enough miles so it won’t set our wallet on fire.  $8,000 seems to be a reasonable budget to get this done but we’ve seen a few high mileage cars out there for less.
We previously owned a Hyundai Azera and thought that it was a pretty luxurious car for the money.  I’d argue that the Genesis and Equus could give any Mercedes, BMW, Acura, or Lexis in its class a run for its money when it comes to features and comfort.
First car? buy used and inexpensive as the lifespan may not be very long for a new driver (I have three kids, been there, done that). Â I was lucky enough to buy 2 cars from my father as he was unable to renew his drivers license. Â Both were older cars with dents but each had less than 40k miles.
A model that you might consider is Scion: Toyota spin off at a lower price point. Â We bought an Xa for commuting and it has been extremely reliable (over 140k miles now). Â Good luck
We were discussing the Scion XB the other night and are seriously considering it. Â I’ve owned several Toyotas over the years and have been happy with them all.
Isn’t Scion no longer making cars?.
Scion is Toyota. Toyota will discontinue the brand name at the end of the year, but will continue to sell the vehicles with a Toyota badge.
I don’t know about Toyota but I can go to youtube and find repair videos for just about anything on my Honda saving me $$$$ over the years.
