I hang mine in the garage so it can air out.
If I had to store it in less space, I’d use a big cotton bag so it could air out and not be compressed.
In my pack it’s stuffed into my plastic pack liner bag along with my sleeping clothes and puffy jacket. At home it has it’s own large plastic storage bin. I use a EE quilt or a MYOG synthetic quilt for summer.
After every trip I take it out of the stuff sack and put it on a clothing rack we have for a couple days to completely dry, then I put it in the big cotton bag it came in. If I have time at camp I even put it in the sun for awhile! I’m conscious about having any moisture in my equipment. I would think it adds to the weight as well as making the down less effective.
I keep my EE quilt in the loose storage sack that came with it. I make sure it’s completely dry before storing. It’s lying on top of a pile of gear in the closet. If I had room, I’d hang it up.
Kick it downstairs and cram it in the lined basement.
Out hiking, I compress my EE quilt, down jacket, a set of long johns, and, sleeping socks in a small compression sack. Then cram it down to about 9″ long. Compression (dry) does NOT hurt down. I NEVER let my down get wet. When I get home, I run it through the dryer on high (electric, not gas) for 15 minutes. Then I hang it in the gear closet.
I’m not sure if you’re asking how I PACK my sleeping bag or how I STORE my sleeping bag. I’m guessing by “basement” you mean the “sleeping bag compartment” that some packs have, but my pack doesn’t have one.
Pack: Loose in the main compartment so it can loft up and surround my other gear and keep things from shifting/rattling, plus it’s semi-lofted when I get to camp.
Store: Either completely loose or in its storage sack (the one that WM provides that is the size of a large garbage bag so you can store it uncompressed). I never compress my bag in storage.
Ohhh. Basement = Sleeping bag compartment. Never heard it called that before. Don’t have one on the pack I mostly use, but I usually do stuff it in the bottom of my pack where the compartment would be. However, after a recent thread on this topic, I am revisiting the cloud method.
In the pack mine goes in an oversized zpacks “dry” bag and is packed near the bottom of my pack.
When I get home I put the sleeping bag (or quilt in most cases) in the dryer with a couple of tennis balls on low heat for a couple of minutes (5-10) before I put it in the closet in a big breathable storage sack.
Before I was married I kept them all stored flat but for some reason my wife thinks that takes up too much space:).
