I’m designing my first dcf tent and have been doing all the research my brain can handle – there’s too much great information on this site alone for one person to contain. I’m ready to pull the trigger on the materials (especially with RBTR’s sale right now), but I’m left with two remaining questions.
- From what I’ve found, bonding seams is the generally accepted method of construction nowadays, and people usually use 3M 9485PC. However, I see Dan boasting the robustness of the hot bonding process used by the factory that makes his tents. Having access to a heat press, I’m inclined to try this process out myself. I imagine they use a different type of adhesive and have been trying to track it down. I notice in the datasheet for 3M 9471LE that 3M suggests heat and pressure for the curing process (yes, I’ve been reading through datasheets for adhesives, that’s how far this has gone). The adhesive used in 9471LE reportedly has comparable adhesion properties to that used in the more standardized 9485PC on Low and High Surface Energy plastics (I believe the mylar laminate falls right on the line between low and high surface energy, but I may be wrong). 9471LE was even also recommended by 3M to Erik G, so I’m thinking it might be the weapon of choice. Does anyone have any experience with the hot bonding process, or with using 9471LE at all?
- Does anyone have a good way to seam noseeum to dcf? I’ve read about sewing it to a strip of dcf and then bonding that to the tent wall like normal. This would work, but I feel like there’s a cleaner way to do it, just don’t know what that way is.
