Bay Area GGG Future

That’s a nice time of year and good weather would make hanging out and visiting  a little easier.

+1 late October.

Downside: No stove offs or any fires given how dry it can be that time of year….

Are GGG’ers going soft? Can’t handle a bit of rain or cold? ;)

No guarantees in life. Couldn’t drive in this last time do to rain. A pleasant, warm evening might be a welcome change.

There was a fire ban at my first GGG so we huddled around some propane fire pits.  I thought they were pretty slick.

While I am fine with Coe I would not mind the idea of having it elsewhere. I know Coe has great access, room, bathrooms, flat areas, trees etc. but at some point we’ll have been there enough times.

A longer hike in would be nice too.

Either way I will be there.

I would love to attend no matter what time of year.  October would be beautiful.

I am in at any date!    Henry Coe is always easy for Nor Cal peeps.    Why not hike to Mississippi Lake at 12 miles in.   Lets burn some calories and drink some calories too!

Finding a hike in location that allows a large number of people is the biggest challenge

I’m good with whatever date and location works for best for the most people. Spring might be nice – fewer fire restrictions, more daylight, no holiday season to contend with. Has anyone heard from Ken Thompson on this subject?

This is he. Long story short there was a site update and an ability was lost and now I’m stuck as K T.

My vote would be for a gathering around the 23-25th of April when, in both 2015 and 2016, several friends and I went to Coe for the flowers-fabulous-and a short backpack. Often good weather and water in the creeks. Winter trips are often over by then, summer trips in the Sierra and even Emigrant are not yet feasible for many so it’s a good time to go to Coe. Have it the weekend before the annual Coe Backcountry Weekend. Many of Coe’s “regulars” do not go there the weekend before because they plan to go for the Backcountry Wkend.

Great flower hike: Corral Trail to Manzanita Point Road then cross over to the Forest Trail with lots of wildflowers and then on to our usual spots, 4 and 5 off of Manz. Pt. Road. Hike back out on Sunday and see fields of poppies along the road-beautiful. Meanwhile others can hike to Los Cruzeros or to Mississippi Lake and return via The Narrows or ?? to the usual camp sites. Different options but we could be together for key times such as Sat. late aft and evening and Sunday morning.

THEN———–for those who can’t make the mid-to-late-April dates, we have ANOTHER gathering in mid-to-late October or late Jan. as usual. Different dates, maybe different people, maybe the regulars get to come to both!

It was a small gathering at Coe this year but I think all who came were glad they got to chat with old friends and new acquaintances-even if you had to come late or leave early. We don’t need big numbers to have a good time with Northern Calif. BPL’ers. My two cents.

I still like the idea of the gcc being a pre season gathering,  but 6, one, 12, other.

Two would be a tough sell to the Mrs. It is an interesting idea Jane. It would help keep the crowd size down to something manageable where people would actually get to spend more than two minutes with someone.  Not going to try to get vendors to attend as vendors, but still do the live action Gear Swap in the overflow lot on Sunday.

+1 on finding somewhere else to have it. Wish more campgrounds were open during the off season.

Going with Jane’s idea of two: would you and Dave G want to each take one of the dates to be responsible for, and be more of an honored guest at the other?  And of course you could delegate responsibilities for some details.  That might ease the burden on you and make the Mrs. happier.

I kinda like the idea of a GGG in more temperature weather (though at those times of year I’m more likely to be working and unable to stay over anyway, so it is 6 of one, half dozen of the other).

How many people typically come to GGG? I know of a hike in spot in Big Sur that has a lot of room for many ppl that does not require permits.  Just putting it out there, not sure if it is feasible.  It is about a 5 mile hike in, there are many campsites as well as a very large meadow/field where a lot of people would be able to camp. There is plenty of water, great day hikes from the area, but no bathrooms if that is a deal breaker.  I always thought it would be cool to do a hike in GGG, even if it is a smaller event.  But I have never attended one so what do I know? =)

60 or so. Had over 100 once. Not again.

Hopefully BPL will survive till the next one…

+1 On a new location, just for something different.

A warmer time of year would encourage more people to come.

I wouldn’t mind a location that is further in from the trail head.

Ken….could simply be a backpacking trip where YOU pick the spot and tell people where to meet.

Emmigrant Wilderness is a place where there are no limits on how many people and you can have fires.

Really Tony, I fully expected that Emmigrant would have a max. party size.

Anyone have a suitable spot out there in mind? Please PM me.

Count me in for either or both dates/times of year.  lI need to test more gear out and get feedback.
