This is the Permanently Waterproof Breathable (PWPB) jacket from Gore that’s rated as durable enough for hiking with a pack.

Considering that this is potentially game-changing DWR-free technology, the launch has been surprisingly low-key and reviews are very sparse – all I could find is this in Spanish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLfPChMRfug. I’m not much of a linguist, but he seemed to like it. For some reason Gore are being coy about the weight, but the review suggests it’s a bit over 200 grams / 7oz which seems acceptable if it really is as durable as advertised.

The launch price was a daunting $400 but it’s been out for a few months now and you can pick it up at a significant discount. So I’m wondering if anyone has practical experience with the garment? Any feedback would be much appreciated, particularly comparisons with the Columbia PWPB offerings.

Curses – can’t edit my original post. I’ve realised that there is a version of the H5 with a conventional DWR fabric, and I’m pretty sure that’s what the Spanish guy is reviewing. So as far as I can see, the ShakeDry version has been flying under the radar.

Yes – I was aware of that discussion, but no-one had actually seen one at that point.

At least we now know the weight, which Gore didn’t think important enough to include in the marketing material:

In answer to your inquiry, the H5 SHAKEDRY Hooded Jacket weighs approximately 7.9 ounces for a size Large.

Not too bad for what claims to be a durable jacket that would actually keep you dry.

But I do find it surprising that there has been so little interest in this potentially game-changing fabric, particularly in a community like this where so many of us geek out over our gear. Is there really no-one here who has tried it?
