Hey folks,

I have been lurking for a few weeks, after finding you guys while researching lightweight philosophy’s for backpacking.

I am an experienced camper, hiker, and backpacker, but have always had more of a traditional approach. I like to be comfortable at camp, and always brought the gear to do so. But as my interests expanded to include different activities in the backcountry, mainly fly fishing, I realized I needed to lighten up my gear loadout in order to bring the other things I wanted to pack along. Like fly rods, wading shoes, tackle etc. etc.

So generally I have gone lighter so I could go heavier, if that makes sense. And I am much happier on the trail, and feel much better the next morning, as opposed to hauling my previous iterations of heavy and bulletproof gear around.

I have learned a lot already, and look forward to learning more along the way! Thanks for being here.

Welcome Matthew. Your background sounds similar to mine in the early 2000’s – trying to lighten backpacking gear to be able to carry more camera gear in my case. There are some folks on BPL that fish too, so you’ll find some good info here.

Hey there,

I fish – Tenkara and regular spincasting. In fact, will be doing so this weekend. Going as light as ever done personally, but some of that will be off-set by fishing gear.

Ask away, this is a great place to learn and find inspiration.

Hi Matthew, and welcome! I’m also a bit of a blend between UL and traditional. My fully loaded pack for backpacking in Alaska is about 25 lbs (with food and water). But that’s so much better than the 50 lb pack I used to carry! This website is a wealth of great information.

Hey Matthew, always nice to meet another new guy here.

Let us know if these forums get you out, fishing gear in hand, in a more enjoyable manner.

(Or give us your tips, so we can do the same).

I didn’t get out at all this summer, because I worked literally EVERY SINGLE DAY lol. As the chef at a fishing lodge in Alaska, I worked the whole summer. But I am excited to get out this fall when I get home to Montana. Autumn is my favorite season to be outdoors. One thing I did get to do was shop for a whole bunch of new gear to keep me entertained over the summer :’D I have some trips planned already.

Welcome.
