Hey Ken, I tend to think that the Arcteryx Alpha SV Jacket is the best out there right now, and has been for some time. A couple of newer versions (late 2014 and 2015 versions) but I would still probably go with the Alpha SV. It is perhaps the best compromise between weight, performance, and price.

"….Alpha SV. It is perhaps the best compromise between weight, performance, and price"

You must be joking. Looks like the antithesis of compromise.

If I was wanting Event fabric, I would go with the Lukes Ultralight jacket.

Thank everyone. Just waiting for the next storm to try out the Haglofs. Will report back.

if an old dago was looking for a parka, a Real parka, like it's supposed to be, long enough to cover your bum, where to go ?

in the past i bought an ll bean goretex park in yellow, and modified it to be thigh length. that worked well enough, and it looked slick, but it was 24oz. could have been less if i'd whacked instead of cunningly shortened it using snaps. could have sliced the liner out of it as well to shave a few more oz.

then next i got a Very Nice ID eVent ThruHiker parka from ProLite and added about 6~8" to it (13oz). that was wonderful, but it's worn out now and has got me drenched the last three trips out, so it need replaced, and new is no longer avail.

any leads on longer parkas ?
the ll bean one has been cheapened to "not so good" anymore.

if i wait long enough, i'll end up with a westcomb and adding a skirt to it like the ThruHiker.

cheers,
v.

ok Ken.
we shall see.
it's said to be in stock, so it's headed our way.

i can return it easy enough on a trip to Cabelas/Reno. i think stp still has an outlet up there.

cheers,
v.

I see already that I prefer the design of the Haglofs to the Westcomb, Better sleeves and hem. Similar though.

The one thing that I really like about Haglof's jackets is the thumb loops…it is ingenious on a rain jacket. Why in the world hasn't anyone else come up with this?

I just wish their kit were cheaper – Backcountry.com carries it now, which makes it slightly cheaper than buying it from Europe, but holy crap it's still such expensive stuff…of course, it's really, really well made……

This jacket works great at keeping the rain off. Has yet to rained here since I purchased it. I may need to do a return if this continues.
