Rained a bit until 1am, then a bit of a northerly wind and the temps dropping. With good gear and good company, it's always fun. Rocked the WM Flight pants while making breakfast. Man are those a delightful luxury.

Must have been a wet hike in! Did you go to West Mtn?

I'm planning to go up to the Catskills toward the end of the week, after the storm Tue and Wed, maybe Thu-Fri or Fri-Sat. It should generate significant snow up there. I want to test gear and try out some stove modifications I've been working on.

I know it's a tough month for most folks to get out and hike, especially mid-week when us retired guys like to go, but if any of you guys up this way want to go let me know via PM. I'm thinking of something relatively easy such as Devil's Acre via Notch Lake (on Rt 214) to Diamond Notch (maybe camp there) and out via Becker Hollow with a short road walk back to the car.

We camped about 1/4 mile north of West Mountain shelter in the little copse of pine trees east of the TT trail on the height just south of the S-BM junction. Pine needles are soft and drain well.

Hike in was a little damp, yeah. But a little wet never killed anyone. It's wet and cold that does that!

Enjoy the Catskills.

More of a "boys night out" kinda thing, but if anyone is interested in taking advantage of the insanely mild weather up here I am planning to do an easy (8 miles in) or stupid-easy (4 miles in) overnighter tomorrow (Sat 12/27). Stupid-easy would be from the Ramapo Equestrian Center parking area to Pine Meadow Lake and easy would be from Turkey Hill Loop south to Island Pond vicinity.

If anyone wants to come up from NYC via Metro North, I can do a pick-up/drop-off at the Croton-Harmon station.

Bummer, I would love to, but I'm stuck here in Fla with all this sunshine. Maybe next weekend.

Very leisurely, so 10am from Turkey Hill Loop parking area if doing the easy 8-mi, or 11am – noon-ish from Ramapo Equestrian Center if doing the stupid-easy one to Pine Meadow lake.

Edit: Also, back on the trail by 8am, so out by 10am-noon-ish… in time to miss the rain.

Cool if you can make it!

Zero snow in Harriman, little in the Catskills, and with less than a month remaining to plan, I am giving this a bump to strongly suggest the Daks trip, Marcy via Johns Brook.

Winter parking at The Garden is free per this recent post.

The Garden (starting point) coordinates are N 44.1889, W 73.8163 (dd.dddd format).

Plenty of parking should be available Friday morning. MLK holiday is the weekend before, so no conflict there.

If we’re on the trail by 10am or so that would be great.

Of course, it’s winter so major snow events can drastically affect plans. As usual, any and all input is very welcome.

Grrrr… edit link…

am in NC for the holidays but will try to make it to a hike in late Jan or Feb.

I’m working on it. In all likelihood, I’m in. (Bob, must’ve been a wet one this weekend. Rain came earlier than expected!)

PS: I updated my gear list, with a column for temperature. I don’t know… seemed like a good idea at the time: Gear List

Christian, super and hope you can swing it! I'll check out your revised gear list.

I really dodged a bullet Sunday. Started hearing rain drops hitting the duomid at about 4:30am and thought "What the heck is this?!!" I did the 8-mi hike in and was dreading having to walk out in a soaking rain. Fortunately, there was a good cellphone signal and I was able to check the radar with WeatherBug and could see the line of rain dissipating quickly on its west side, so Cyrus and I sat tight and had breakfast in the tent. The rain stopped shortly after 8am and we were on the trail at 8:19am with no more rain… Yippee.

Hard to fathom how wrong a "forecast" can be less than 24 hours away.

Steve, sounds like a good tune-up for the Daks trip. Very little snow from this current event but more in the forecast. What are you interested in doing?

Christian, sorry you can't make it, but I realize there are certain family commitments that have absolute precedence!

At this point I am still a "go" and plan to be at the The Garden parking area around 10am.

The medium range 'forecast' (barely worth the electrons it's made of) looks quite moderate by Daks standards:

Hi Bob

You might want to be careful in your terminology of parking spots in order to avoid confusion. The "ADK Loj" most commonly refers to the Heart Lake parking area (Lake Placid side of the Eastern High Peaks)which definitely charges for parking. "The Garden" is the parking area that affords access from the Keene Valley side of the Eastern High Peaks and doesn't charge fees in winter.

Nice site describing both parking areas:

Thanks, Doug, for the correction!

I edited both posts above to accurately reflect the location.

The Garden parking lot (starting point) coordinates are N 44.1889, W 73.8163 (dd.dddd format).

I did the trip – report HERE

The timing worked out great as I missed the snow event at home, and the weather in the Daks was quite favorable. I’ve done Marcy in a white-out and it ain’t as much fun! ;^)

Man, it sounds like you are having all the fun!

I have some professional commitments that will keep me busy for a while. But perhaps in feb I will get a small respite and be able to do some climbing.

Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to the storm that's about to hit NYC! 30in of snow and possible gusts of 60mph! I love alpine weather :D
