Are the bags that Sawyer is putting out to use with their Squeeze in the last year or so good enough to be used long term or are people using something else?

I have a later version and have had no issues. I carry a couple soda bottles for water so I could always use one for dirty water.

I had 2 go on me on the JMT within 8-10 days. (They were the newest version and were brand new out of the box.)

Back to Smartwater bottles for me.

This is bad news! Mine hasn't failed, but I've only used it twice so far. Good thing I got it at REI.

I hear that the mini platypus bags fit ok with the squeeze filter. Platy bags are very durable.

Didn't trust the old ones, and though I have a couple of the new ones(I may or may not have let a Sawyer filter freeze..twice), they haven't been used.
Been using the same Evernew 1.5L with the Mini as I did with the Squeeze-frequent use since late 2012.

The one I'm using is the newer version, 1 liter. So this year, it has lasted for a 4 day trip in Arizona and 21 days on the JMT. It is showing signs of wear though. I roll the bag down rather than squeezing the water through.

Like a printer company. Sells you the filter cheap and makes money on the consummables ( like ink). Why do you think the theeads on the filter don't match platy bottles.

My Evernew bag failed in the same way the Sawyer bags do. I tried to repair it with Crazy Glue. That just made it worse as it kind of melted the plastic. With some duct tape, I was able to last until town. I replaced it with a Smart Water bottle. Those things are amazingly durable!

I have read that there are less failures when the bag is rolled up as apposed to just squeezing the bag. I have always slowly rolled the bag keeping in mind others reported failures. Even considering this I wouldn't be without a backup. Curious how others use the system? I will probably use this 1 lt bag to failure just to see how it goes.

Still, not very scientific, I probably have the 1 in million that's gonna hold together.

With mine, the bladder is separating from the neck so I don't think rolling vs squeezing would have made a difference (it started leaking after 10 days of use, during my 4th trip). And I was nice to it!

I've never trusted their bags, new or old, so never used them.

I've had no complaints pairing the filter with an Evernew bag. I've carried it this way on several trips without incident.

One of my hiking buddies just bought the mini and a 1L platy bag. To my surprise, no dirty water leaked through the threads on our last trip. Not sure if something has changed with Platy bags or not. I'll update this thread if this changes but I'm cautiously optimistic after seeing him use it this way for a few days.

I've had problems pairing the Sawyer with a PET bottle. With two Sawyer Squeeze filters (not minis), I had the gasket start popping out of the filter and into the neck of the bottle. I believe it was due to the suction created after squeezing water out. Contacted Sawyer and they assured me that it was due to me over tightening it. I don't think that I was but after thrashing the second gasket, I stopped using this filter with a PET bottle.

Sawyer has one of the best UL filters on the market but after watching Jon's YouTube video, clearly there's still a problem with these bags. They really need to go to DEFCON1 on this issue before one of their competitors delivers a product that does the same thing without the bag failures.

Funny… I've Ben using them for 2-3 years ( 3 that came with the Squeeze, nd a small one that came with the mini) and haven't had one burst in me yet. I usuall, roll to fill a 1 l. Bottle, and am not particularly gentle. Guess I'm lucky ;-)

Are the new Squeeze filters the same as the ones that come with the Mini? I hear a lot about the regular Squeeze filters failing but not so much about the Mini. The layers on my Mini are starting to separate but it seems to be mostly cosmetic at this point.

Sawyer Mini Failure?

Should I be worried (I have a 5 day trip coming up in a couple of weeks)?

The Mini is just a smaller Squeeze. It uses the same bags. Note that the bags come in different sizes.

I think he's talking about the bags, not the filter.

Tough call on the bags…it's one of those things that could last a year or fail tomorrow. I'd carry a spare along with it for 5 days.

three of us just completed a 5 day 60 mile stretch of the JMT. We had two Sawyer Minis With three Sawyer bags used for dirty water. All three failed ! they leaked at the junction of the bag to the plastic screw nozzel. the system is reliable if you use it in a gravity fed configuration without putting pressure on in (ok for in camp use but Too slow on the trail).

Will probalbly return to Steri pen for trail use and limit Sawyer to in camp use with 2.5 liter gravity fed configuration, and will have if for backup in the event of Steri pen failure.

This was my experience in 2013. 2 bags in 5 days. Pushing clear water very delicately. Bags failed at the same place as you. Replaced with hard bottles.
