I'm trying to understand why it might be true that less clothing worn in a sleeping bag helps you stay warmer. I'm thinking that its because your body heat is more easily lost directly to the down, which builds a pool of air (not static, but stable) that increases in temperature and radiates that heat back to you, effectively reducing heat loss at skin level. Is that bunk?
I'm also trying to understand why I'm colder in my hammock when trying to supplement my underquilt with a pad on top. That is my experience, but I'm being told it should not be. I've got enough "caps" in my hammock using my UQ to feel secure in its setup, so I'm guessing that its similar to the clothes issue, that I'm robbing the quilt of heat. Its still passing heat through as it otherwise would, but there is less buildup of warm air as much of my warmth is being retained by the pad – and less efficiently than down, so I'm colder.
I'm aware of and feel like I understand the technical definition of conductive insulation (thanks to being in an argument with an engineer), but there seems to be something lost in the strict adherence to that definition when compared to anecdotal experiences that I've read about and experienced myself. I'm hoping that some of you might have some thoughts that could explain it better. Whathinksyou?
