Yes, I forgot my PotMug (which also holds my Caldera TiTri, stove, matches and alcohol) on a 2 day and 2 night trip this past weekend, with only dehydrated food.

With no matches I used my magnesium striker and MYOG "cotton ballvaseline" tinder to get a fire. And while the garbage that is may be found on lakes in Northern Canada is saddening normally, it had utility this trip. I trolled the beach until I found an old Ginger Ale can and used it to boil my water.

It got me wondering if the same thing happened in a less polluted area what the solution would be.

Any storiessolutions from folks who had to make do without a piece of key gear inadvertently left behind?

Just eat it.
Same calories, wet or dry.

Insert cold water in food bag ( i am assuming a factory resealable bag or ziplock), seal bag and wait to hydrate. Doesn't have to be hot water to rehydrate.

I would want it hot too. Could warm it up with rocks.

The beach is great for replacing gear. Mussel shells for spoons, various line, rope etc.. The occasional shoe, etc…

Bushcraft skills put into play.

checklist….

If I recall correctly, some Native Americans use to heat water by putting rocks in a fire and then drop the hot rocks into their woven bbaskets that were filled with water. The specific heat of rock are pretty high.

I seem to remember that a very well-known and repected BPL author left his alky stove behind on one trip with his wife. (Not me, I use a canister.) Oh Dear. His wife found an empty Coke can at the campsite and offered it up hopefully. Hot dinners followed.

Cheers

I think this could give a person horrible stomach cramps. I would not eat it dry but would first rehydrate it as much as possible.

I wonder how long it would take to rehydrate a typical dehydrated meal using cold water. Pasta takes about 45 minutes with cold water. I don't really remember… Wouldn't want to try rice with cold water.
