september 1-15th is dove season since im an avid upland bird hunter i will be shooting every night for the first two weeks of september wish i could make it

next year plan a trip around hunting season jack geeze lol

After talking to Ken and trying to figure the permits and things out, this is what we came up with. I got a permit today for a total of 6 people, it's $5.00 per person for the permit. Here's the deal, I need to know who is 100% sure they can go, if you're not 100% sure, then please leave that spot open for someone who is. I hate to do it this way, but we had more response then we had anticipated. When I called today there were still permits available, but we need to keep the group to a minimum do to the fact that the more tents you have, the harder it will be to find enough room to pitch all of them in the same area. I don't want to sound rude, but I think this works the best, so if you can please post again, those that are 100% sure so we can update the list. If we go by the list we have now it looks like we
are full, this is not to say that you can't get your own permit and join us, you're more than welcome, as I know some people still want to come that aren't on the list, here's a side note, if we only add 2 more people, I can call and add them to my permit, no problem, so go ahead and post if you're 100%, then if we end up with 8 I will call and add them to the list.

No it is not, as there have been much more than 6 that have expressed interest in going. I have gotten pm's and Jack has personally spoken to others that have made their interest known. We have you as 100% sure. Sit back and enjoy the ride……the circus will continue from day to day!

No, not really. Already booked that weekend…just trying to continue all the useless redundancy.

Nice James, now that you are bitten by the Sierra bug you should join in on these. High peaks, trailless passes, high alpine lakes, 10-13,000 feet hiking, and bears oh my!

The trip is now closed. We have 6 definate attendees. If anyone decides to bow out let us know. If anyone still would like to go, you are more than welcome to get your own permit and campground at Onion Valley and join us.

Also on a side note. I will be heading to Onion Valley from Fresno. I have family business to attend to in Reedley and will be heading out Saturday morning and will be meeting everyone at Onion Valley, Saturday afternoon.

I have secured a campsite for Sat. evening, Sept. 3rd at the Onion Valley trailhead. This will give us a chance to acclimate and be ready for a nice hike the next morning. I will pm everyone the site # when we get closer to departure

Hi all, sorry to intrude, but I stumbled across this thread while researching my own hike.

As an alternative to your first day, you might consider going over University pass to Golden Bear Lakes instead of going around via Kearsarge pass. It's shorter, but steeper. On the pass, the view of the Center basin is unforgettable.

If you decide on this, take note that it's not for weaker hikers. When you attack the pass, you'll want to stay to the left of the obvious chute route because the rocks in the chute, although they are quite large, are easily put in motion.

Thanks for the suggestion Jeff….first day hiking might be a stretch for us. Sounds VERY intriguing though. Have you been over Junction Pass???

Secor suggests an ice axe for that cross country route.

It appears to have an ascent angle of about 2000 feet per mile. That's non-trivial.

Sorry, I haven't been over Junction Pass.
BG does have a point…the left side access up University Pass is mostly north facing and might be treacherous if it still has more than a little snow.

I have to admit, on my upcoming trip to Golden Bear lakes, this time we're going around and over Kearsarge pass…the two teenage girls with us would not enjoy University pass.

There's still a fair piece of snow in the mountains, but it is confined more to the north facing slopes around 12,000' and above.

Two days ago I was boot-skiing down the south side of Muir Pass (JMT in Kings Canyon National Park). In the morning, it was fast. In the afternoon, it was slushy.

I would bring it. First night is in Center Basin, second night is near the Tyndall Crk Junction, third night is in Vidette Meadows….long story short….yes

I beleive on the permit it says it's required, I'll check it again to make sure, but I'm bringing mine anyways.

Let me interject here. I own five different bear canisters, and I would expect to take the optimum one with me on that trip. That leaves four others. They might be too large, too small, or just right. I could arrange to accidentally have an extra one in the trunk of my car, just in case somebody was desperate, but it might cost one beer.

Besides, suppose you got stuck with the one that is a little too small. Somebody else might be carrying one with some extra room for overnight.
