I find this kind of post is in a technical-grey area of the Terms and Conditions of the forum.

I wouldn’t really have a problem with this post if:

1) you informed everyone that the link you give is an affiliate link (he makes $10 by referring customers who purchase something)

AND/OR

2) two out of your last three posts didn’t contain this affiliate link

P.S. I know I’m probably coming across like a hard-ass in this post. Truth is I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt that you’re really just sharing some great deals with us (irregardless of financial compensation), but there really are a lot of spammy people on the internet that we (read: BPL Comunity) should try to keep out.

That you don't need an invite to join the Clymb. Perhaps you should mention anybody using your invite to make a purchase will result in your getting a $10 credit. That would clear up a lot of the grey area mentioned in the post above me.

Go to http://www.theclymb.com and sign up for yourself, if not.

According to their sign up page you do need to be “invited by an existing customer” otherwise you go on the waiting list until “space becomes available”. I have no idea how long that wait is.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Either way please don't stop altogether. I for the life of me can't figure out how to get The Clymb to email me with the deals and I never remember to check the website.

Either way, I personally find these posts very irritating. I don't think there is anything wrong with them if, as stated before, you're clear about the details. You find one of these posts for every single sale that they have, regardless if there is a great deal or not. Everything worth wild is sold out in very short period of time.

On a side note; I signed up without an invite and it took about 2 days before they "welcomed" me.

I understand how people don't like like this, it's a problem that's been going on for years with other sites (see: google/dropbox invites), and it can become irritating.

However, I have to say that I was grateful to find a link and invite posted for an item that I was looking for a few months ago. I have no problem with the fact that the person I linked from got and extra $10 from me. Some of these deals are really good–today's had some event jackets for ~$150–that's unheard of for an event shell, even though they didn't last very long.

Perhaps it would be more appropriate, when someone posts a deal for theclymb.com, that they ask people to PM for an invitation.

i agree it is sort of annoying, especially for members of BPL who pay a membership fee. so they have a right to complain.

but as long as it is only one thread a week announcing what is on sale – and its only $10 to the poster, and its not like they are getting a check, its only a credit to buy gear at the clymb.

"but as long as it is only one thread a week announcing what is on sale – and its only $10 to the poster, and its not like they are getting a check, its only a credit to buy gear at the clymb."

Of course you would think that. All your posts are in gear deals. Why not participate in the forums?

Ken, thanks for showing interest in my posting activity on BPL. You have a bad day?

I can totally see both sides here.

Another forum I frequent has created a specific thread for these kind of deal sites. The general idea is that it cuts down on the clutter, and let's people pm if they want an invite.

I don't think these posts/announcements need to go away all together, but do think that there might need to be a few guidelines.

Before anyone goes through the effort of checking out my post history, let me save you the time… Yes, I post mainly on gear swap.

Carry on.

Bobby:

I'm with Ken on this one. Don't you have any interest at all about participating — other than posting "gear deals"?? As of now, ALL that you're doing here on this forum is spamming. An infrequent spammer is still a spammer. Do you hike? Feel free to share your experiences.

Please let Bobby and everybody else post where they want to without persecution ; ).

There is getting to be more and more of these web-based fly-by-night marketing operations, and I won't do business with any of them that are this slimey.

There are plenty of normal web-based companies and web-based cottage operations, and I don't think I need some of these slimey yahoos.

Yes these clymb posts do get old but i am guilty of posting a few earlier last year and people complained then that it had gone on for a while but none the less i still have gotten 123 people to join the clymb from posting 2-3 sales(granted not all bought something..). Not all people regularly check the clymb and they do have pretty good outdoor merch at very good prices so I for one don't mind a little reminder once a week. I don't feel the Gear Deals forum getting overposted on anyway..

You own dept of goods? Wow. I thought backcountry.com owned dept of goods. Does this mean you own backcountry.com? Please clarify.

I saw it mentioned that someone described one of these businesses as a "fly by night operation"… Dept of goods and theclymb are neither. Both are very reputable and fantastic to deal with.

The way that sites like the clymb work is they depend on little people like us spreading word of mouth. I have never posted anything from the clymb on BPL, ever. But for you guys to be irritated is fine, noone is asking you to post in this thread or even glance at it beyond discovering it is from a clymb user. However, we all benefit from the outrageously low prices on sweet gear they offer to us. Show a little respect, the business model is genius and benefits us.

Christ. I think it's safe to assume Bobby Lee was kidding. Sarcastically pointing out that he has nothing to gain by posting a 50% off coupon code for DoG to those looking down their noses at him for being a new member who has only posted in Gear Deals.

I like the Clymb posts here. There aren't all that many, and posts like these are *exactly* why there is a Gear Deals forum. It keeps this sort of stuff out of the Gear and Gear Swap fora. If you want to go to their site without using someone's invite link, just chop off the invite bit. Problem solved.

Wish I saw it yesterday, but that's my problem. Thanks for posting this!
