"Can somebody puleeeze define "yuppie" for me in the context of backpacking?"

Gosh Tom, don't you know anything! Yuppies, in the context of backpacking, are like guppies, only bigger! If you think I'm making that up, then read this from aqua-fish.net: "The Guppy fish is probably the most popular aquarium fish species in the world, and is also known as one of the cheapest fish in shops even though some forms may be expensive. Small, beautiful, peaceful, lively, curious and hardy, there are many colourful variations that can be collected and easily bred. The Guppy fish is one of the best choices for beginners. … However, like every fish kept in captivity, these fishes also require proper care and conditions. Although care of Guppy fish is easy, one shouldn't underrate it as Guppies may suffer of diseases too!"

See!

"Ahh nit pickers will always be nit pickers i suppose."

Just as the grammatically and orthographically challenged who are incapable of putting together a coherent sentence are destined to forever feel misunderstood.

Eric can't define it, but he knows one when he sees one.

Oh, WOW. I used to raise guppies when I was a kid!

Does that mean I can raise yuppies in my spare time? If I don't buy them lots of expensive UL gear will they die on me? Ooooh, Doug, I've got so many questions about this subject. It sounds like such a great hobby.

As usual, we can rely on what Grandpa said:

"If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right".

Certainly holds true for writing – nobody expects perfect grammar and spelling, especially in an informal forum such as BPL, but at least make some effort.

It also shows respect for the reader, in my opinion.

Hey, wait – does that period belong inside or outside the quotation mark? (I really want to know)

"Hey, wait – does that period belong inside or outside the quotation mark? (I really want to know)"

In journalism, the period would go inside the quotation marks.

I can't find my copy of Fowler's Modern English Usage quickly, so not sure what that would say.

I think that it would be great if we could all chip in some money and buy Eric a new shift key for his keyboard.

Hey Eric,

IIRC, you posted a great shot of a marmot, and now I know what a marmot looks like. How about posting a picture of a yuppie so I'll know what they look like too.

these are the toughest work gloves around. im trying to find them by the single pair, i get them at work but they are only sold in bulk…

dynemma, super tough glove ive been wearing daily for about 4 months, commercial jobsite construction. they are finally starting to wear out.

dyneema is the same filament as spectra, amsteel, etc.

Darn, Eric, you're the real deal. That is freakin' hi lar ee us. I'd never confuse one of them with a marmot, that's for sure.
