"What about countries in the Middle East that you can't spell the name of, but you have no scruples about taking their oil?"

A citizen of The Commonwealth sermonizing about taking oil from the Middle East? Woo hoo, that's rich. ;-)

I thought that might get a bite! :)

I can't do anything about the past, but i hope i live to see a free, and independant, Scottish republic. I don't class myself as British, no matter what it says on my passport. ;)

P.S.
I've been known to borrow sachets of sauce.

I think you lads are getting pretty close to that dream. Good luck.

My specialty is napkins. ;-)

First thing I do whenever we rent a car when traveling? Load up on the napkins! You can never have enough napkins in a car.

I also claim that baby wants his cookies and a full can of juice when flying. 4 flights later the diaper bag is bulging with 8 cans of juice/pop and 8 single serving packets of snacks. Our trail snacks and drinks were taken care of. I sure as doodles didn't feel guilty considering how much we paid out $$ for Walker to have his own seat!

One way to frame the situation:

LEGAL – the laws or The Line

MORAL – right and wrong – more or less like religious judgement – YMMV

ETHICS – somewhere in between the laws and morals lurk the ethics
This is the grey area

For example, the legal speed limit might be 65 MPH. You are heading for the trailhead at 70 MPH. This is clearly ILLEGAL. The law says 65 and you are 5 over.

Most would not say going 70 MPH is IMMORAL.

From an ethical standpoint – we get into safety and fuel consumption etc THE GREY. How many think it is UNETHICAL to go 70?

This is why snatching extra packets, spoons, etc is an ETHICAL argument. (where is your line)

Killing the cashier just because you are in a bad mood is ILLEGAL. (crossed the line)

Arguing with the fryer guy about abortion is a MORAL thing. (your beliefs)

Calling someone who takes "freebies" is thief is in the MORAL space.

It's like driving 70 MPH.

What I like to do is buy plastic spoons from Walmart. Then I sneak them into McDonalds and add them to the spoon pile. Now what am I when I come in the next day and take them back?

You can break man's laws, but you can't break nature's laws.

The best freebies this summer were the handouts at the forest service offices, which they asked me to take–free day-glo shoelaces, Smokey the Bear coloring books, and cool packable pens that looked like a big farmer's match.

Hike your own hike, but don't forget to pay the campground fee.

Gary, totally laughing about the NF freebies! The ruler I use in my office when I make FBC cozies is a green Smoky The Bear one. Hehheh!

I read this whole thread and was just rolling on the ground laughing because not only was it funny, but it was SO CLOSE to the way I do things.

I took a minute to gauge how I wanted to permanently handle this type of scenario in the future. Do I want to “steal” or just give my self open opportunity to take from others?

Well I went to McDonald’s today and they sold me a CASE… yes a CASE of salsa packets. Do check this link for all the details.

362 McDonald’s Salsa packets

Plus, it is a writing medium for your last will and testament. You know, just in case the stove blows up.

Love that you just outright bought a case of salsa packets!

This last week I grabbed a handful of salt and pepper packets from a McD's. Going to include some in my vacuum sealed dehydrated meals I'm making for my PCT thru. I'm a decent guy, never been to jail, don't push down old ladies in intersections or kick dogs for fun. Somehow, I've been able to sleep well in spite of my criminal behavior.

But I may have to follow suit and buy some condiments. I found a great olive oil dispenser this week (large saline eye solution bottles, leak proof) but the salsa sounds good…

Don't forget about http://www.minimus.biz – they carry most things in single serving packets – and at very reasonable prices. $20 and up gets you FREE shipping. They also sell cases!

Sadly they don't carry the good salsa though ;-)

At least for hot sauce, surely you all have some form of hot sauce in your fridge? I have little plastic bottles that I put Sriracha, Secret Aardvark, and/or this other habenero salsa in. It goes on everything, and is particularly delicious in pasta.

Net cost was $1 for the dropper bottle as I already have the hot sauce anyway, I'm not giving any money to McDonalds or other fast food joints, and not creating unnecessary trash for single servings of crappy picante sauce.

What you are repackaging is something that does not readily GO BAD. Salsa… does not last long once opened. I wished I lived in an ideal place where I could live by all of my ideals. Not giving to McDonalds, but honestly this is a thru-hike, and I need to save $$$. I try not to shop at Walmart either, but I don't know what your wallet looks like, but mine is not deep.

I Recently bought a case of 200 mayo packets. Im offering up about 1/2 the case in gear swap Pay it Forward.

Here are the PIF rules

1. The items offered below are free but you must pay shipping.
2. You must also "Pay it Forward" by posting something free (must be worth the cost of shipping).
3. Your "Pay it Forward" offer must come with the same terms as this one.
4. Your "Pay it Forward" buyer must also post their own "Pay it Forward" item.
5. Your "Pay it Forward" buyer must also require the next buyer to post their own "Pay it Forward" item (copy and paste these rules into your PIF post).

Brandon Sanchez "On the whole the fast food industry is wreaking havoc on the environment."
You do realize that on a per meal basis the fast food industry is faaaaaaaar superior in efficiency right? RIGHT? You also realize that they wouldn't exist if we(as a society) didn't want them to right? RIGHT? Take some responsibility for your actions as a society. see how that works? You blame it on an industry, I blame it on you.
