Here's some good general info about ink costs: http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?threshold=5&mode=nested&commentsort=0&op=Change&sid=1663412
If you can afford the initial investment, buy a color laser printer. It will more than pay for itself in the long run. You might be able to find a used one cheap on ebay.
If you do buy an inkjet, you could check and make sure it isn't one of the ones that tries to detect aftermarket cartridges. You can get also cartridges refilled at Office Max, I think.
Agreed. Color laser is best for printing lots of maps. Not very good for photos though- so keep that in mind.
A printer with separate tanks for different colors is smart because when a color runs out you replace that tank only and not a single multi-color tank.
I have a Samsung color laser and a Canon Pixma for photos. Both work great.
+1 on the Canon Pixma
+2 on Canon Pixma pre-Chipped printer , like the IP6000D . InkGrabber Ink works well and is cheaper.Canon scanners like the 8400F will scan both paper and slides. Mine have worked flawlessly for 4 years. You may want to look into the software Inksaver. An alternative is gray-scaling if you don't need color . Also reductions of size in Photo shop and printing both sides of paper.
