Another "+1" … An option to check a box for either a cuben version or silnylon verion during the TarpTent checkout process would be nice. :) (For all of them not just the Moment!)

>Henry,

Any chance you might add a zipper to the other mesh side? Seems like this would allow fly adjustment totally from the inside as well as utilizing that vestibule space as well.

The front connection between floor and canopy is vertical mesh and the space beyond that is vestibule. The back connection between floor and canopy is horizontal mesh (5" above ground) and therefore there would really not be vestibule space under the mesh shelf. There is plenty of gear space in the front vestibule, at your side on the floor, and even at each end of the floor. A zipper along the back wall really would not add value. Any tightening of the arch sleeve can be done from the other side at the vestibule. The back wall will slide up and down the pole sleeve by pulling on an internal clip.

As already at other places stated, the Moment is a beautiful tent – Henry, you're a genius! I like the looks and possibilities of it, and the weight is great. I'll try to get my mate to buy the Moment, that way I too get to play with it. I try not to walk down the path that Franco goes – four Tarptents already ;)

Hendrick
I have more tents than that from another manufacturer. Different fabrics and geometry. They are some of my "play" tents, some that I modified for the maker. All solo shelters, not that interested in doubles but I have a couple of those too. ( don't have children…)
Franco

Sorry about the Cuben comments, don't take them seriously for the Moment.

Ah but Franco, if you had one in the backyard already I am sure you would Live in the Moment.

I wish I saw a couple boxes in the back of Henry's truck, I would Seize the Moment. But that may sadden him as he may not have a Moment to spare…

Crawling back under my literary rock now.

You like tents, Sorry Henry but all my Tarptents are now gone, I'm a tarp man now, for the most part.
Awaiting my MLD Cuben Patrol, and will probably drop the hammer on a Spinntex EXP Super-Mid.
I find the small packed size and simplicity of tarps, more conducive to UL backpacking.

Hey Michael, the comparison is not fair. Really, what would you rather be in above treeline in a raging wind storm with blowing rain…..

A 4 season bomber tent, Yep tis true, tents do have their place and are probably the best choice for most. All of my trips are in Northern Michigan Forests, where camping above treeline isn't an issue.
There are many many people that have done AT,PCT,CDT, Thru-Hikes with tarps too though, and I think, when using tarps in the High country, you would really have to choose your campsites very carefully, possibly even to the point of camping below timberline whenever possible.
I remember reading where Andrew Skurka was forced to seek low ground on more than just a few occasions, because of his style of hiking and shelter choice.

That may be true with the most common tarp setups.
When it comes to extreme conditions, I'd feel more comfortable in a tipi tarp staked close to the ground than most 4 season tents.

People may complain about the condensation, but if it isn't getting you or your gear wet, what does it matter?

Totally, totally, totally agree!!!!!

Anyone have any field reports on this yet? Any ideas how this would work in the North East US where it can be humid one night and bone dry the next? Thanks.

"It hasn't shipped yet."

True. However, some people clearly have early demos and Franco was supposed to have gone out with it at least once this month.

>"It hasn't shipped yet."

That's correct. Shipping starts Sept 8 and no one has demos. I will have one to show at PCT Day (Marine Park, Cascade Locks) on Saturday for anyone in the Portland area planning to attend.

Tent looks fantastic, very 'pretty' design.

>I just want the cuben version with the carbon pole option???

Yes, yes yes.

Tarp vs tent has already had plenty of airing, but… I find my tent simpler and not much heavier than my cuben patrol+hiking pole+extra pegs+bivy bag. I agree though that the tarp packed size, esp of cuben, is nice.

But I still prefer my MLD Patrol over a tent: for the openess and views, even when it's wet. Love lying under it in a forest while the rain patters down at the end of the day, and I can still see the outside world – in a tent I have to be zipped away from it all.

Neither, pack it in and get below the treeline !

"Neither, pack it in and get below the treeline !"

But then you miss the morning views…..

Not if you are in a Double Rainbow with the rainporches deployed. True bliss with views out both sides and protection from sandflies at 650 grams per person :)

The Moment looks very interesting…

Good point, I will have to try this with mine. Do you mean like this? (from http://www.tarptent.com/doublerainbow.html. Pity I don’t walk with trekking poles though. Or with other people :)

Christopher – what is most important to you? Us or 'them' (as in work)?

PostedSep 15, 2009 at 3:57 pm

I take my MLD Supermid, over the Moment, even for solo usage. Superior space, Superior for winter usage, the ability to cook inside, and I can partially stand up, making changing clothing easier too. Minimal pitching with 4 stakes and 1 trekking pole, with 18" pole jack and with 4 upper tie-outs for rough weather pitching.

It would be interesting to see what does better in high winds, however. The Moment shape (Akto, Laser Comp, etc) has been proven to be extremely windworthy. Low profile always does better in the wind.

Mike – you have a Moment? If so, could you post some pics?
