Post to plan the 2018
PNW GGGMBC.Aug 15, 2017 at 10:09 pm #3485255We got a late start for 2017 and there were slim pickings for Group Campsites in August and no real luck finding availability Friday-Sunday. Â Looks like Recreation.gov is already taking reservations for next year.
We discussed either returning to Millersylvania or finding one closer to St. Helens. I’m good with whatever but while I enjoyed loafing in camp this year, I’d like to position ourselves closer to good trails for a Saturday day hike.
I have nothing planned that far out but I’m thinking we should look for something from mid July through the end of August.
Hopefully the link works with my filtered search results but here are a few in Washington, most near Rainier.

I found a nice looking group site near St. Helens a few months ago but can’t remember its name and am still looking for it.
Discuss.

Aug 16, 2017 at 7:39 am #3485299Forest Service campgrounds take reservations 6 months ahead of time
WA state parks 9 months
I think if you made a reservation with recreation.gov, at some point it would deny you unless it was within that window

MBC = Mossy Butt Club
Jerry,
I only got as far in recreation.gov to where the next step was to swipe the card, but it looked like I could reserve it now. I’ll look again.
Aug 16, 2017 at 9:07 am #3485334I’m not sure if it’s a glitch in their system but the website states:
Reservations must be made 4 Day(s) ahead of arrival and can be made up to 6 Month(s) in advance.
But I confirmed that I’m able to select campsites one year out and that the next step is to actually pay for it.
Aug 16, 2017 at 9:24 am #3485341IME it has always been a six month window for reservations.
Aug 16, 2017 at 9:25 am #3485342I bet that before it takes your money it’ll say you can’t do it
At least that’s what’s happened to me
But maybe you’re reserving something that doesn’t have the 6 month limit
Aug 16, 2017 at 9:31 am #3485344Yup there are already weekends that have been reserved by other folks so it’s probably a good time to figure out a location and date.
These are just the federal ones and I haven’t explored state campgrounds yet or group campsites in Oregon. Since they are already filling up, I’m planning on paying for the campsite this August 28th and will shoot for a Friday-Sunday reservation sometime mid July through the end of August 2018.
Here are a few choices closer to St. Helens.
Beaver Campground:
Peterson Prairie:
Atkisson Group Camp:
Here are some near or in Mt. Rainier N.P.:
North Fork Bear Group Camp:
Clear Lake:
Ohanapecosh is the only campsite I’ll list that I’ve actually been to. It’s outside the park so no additional fee to access it and there are some nice trails to a nearby waterfall and grove of the patriarchs in camp.
Cougar Rock is inside the park and requires a entrance fee or access pass:
Near or in Olympic National Park:
Coho Campground:
Sol Duc:

Aug 16, 2017 at 11:11 am #3485380Maybe you can book a performance by the Soggy Bottom Boys?
Aug 16, 2017 at 12:15 pm #3485414Sol Duc campsite has too many amenities, would probably be packed. The Coho campsite looks okay. Clear Lake looks really good, I’d lean toward that one.
Aug 27, 2017 at 4:26 pm #3487327Clear Lake sounds good to me, give it a go.
Aug 27, 2017 at 6:22 pm #3487346Go for it. And this time we all share the site  fee expense.
Aug 27, 2017 at 7:48 pm #3487369I believe La Wis Wis campground, further south of Ohanapecosh, has a group site. We were just there. And you get to say La Wis Wis.

Mods,
If you can lock this thread from further comment, it’d be greatly appreciated.
