Epirb and acsenders. But for my birthday today i got a GPS and rain jacket. It'll give my mum a piece of mind so she doesn't have to worry about me when i go out walking.
Yay! going walking for a week on the 4th of jan
Dec 26, 2008 at 9:52 am #1466544You know what they say about mum (in my house anyway)……if momma ain't happy, nobody's happy!
Dec 26, 2008 at 10:28 am #1466548…
Dec 26, 2008 at 11:25 am #1466553Is it just me or did REI put everything back to full price after Christmas…..hrmmm….seems like they want full-price for items bought with the gift cards, now that gift-buying is over.
Kind of irritating because after I saw how low they were willing to go, it's hard to pay full-price for anything.
Dec 26, 2008 at 11:38 am #1466555Kahtoola Microspikes. My Yaktrax broke in the ice storm last weekend.
Dec 26, 2008 at 12:22 pm #1466573Hi jay
> give my mum a piece of mind
Ahhh… a piece of whose mind?Oh – did you mean peace of mind? :-)
Cheers
Dec 26, 2008 at 1:05 pm #1466589Santa brought me a BPL SUL Ti short handled spoon. 4.75" long and 0.25 ounces. Just right for my Firelite SUL550.
Dec 26, 2008 at 1:12 pm #1466591Luckily, REI carries almost no UL stuff — so no temptation there…
Dec 26, 2008 at 1:36 pm #1466592If you need to buy something, anything at all, wait till late Feb or March. My prediction is that by that time many retailers (including REI) will be selling lots of stuff for less than cost.
Dec 26, 2008 at 3:11 pm #1466602Umm, what happens then? should I be stocking up on Ramen? Alai
Dec 26, 2008 at 6:18 pm #1466638Dec 26, 2008 at 7:49 pm #1466645I was a good boy:
Zebralight H30 w/2 RCR123A Batteries and Charger
Perhaps the perfect headlamp for backpacking? Haven't tried it for that yet, but for reading up-close thru on-trail navigation, the H30 really "shines."Kershaw Two-Can
OK, I was looking for a tiny one-handed open/close knife, and decided to go with the Two-Can, a clever hybrid scissor/knife. Not a one-handed knife, alas, but still a keeper.Leatherman Serac S2
Like Swiss Army and Gerber, Leatherman has jumped on the LED flashlight scene, and they've really done their homework. The single AAA light has a Cree XR-E 7090 LED, two brightness levels (5 and 35 lumens) and always turns on at 5 lumnes, and–get this–sports a clicky switch, so you can operate it comfortably with one hand.ID Bugaboo Bivy, eVent (in Green!)
Oooooo, la la! Been drooling over this for months, and these never go on sale (and if they do, it's the yellow one). Really can't wait to try this baby out.Dec 26, 2008 at 8:51 pm #1466652I got an AXE for Christmas. No kidding! I wanted a hatchet for backpacking as a companion to my ultralight wilderness ski hut setup, which I featured as one of my staff picks this year (the Ti Goat Vertex 8+ and Ti Stove). It's the little Gerber Backpacker's Axe, 13.5 oz, which means I can chop wood from my sleeping bag :)

MLD DuoMid (Spectralite)Dec 27, 2008 at 11:02 am #1466705Well, for my pre-Christmas week hiking, I got nothing but rain…and a secret new toy I can't tell you about, and a 2 ounce trout spinning rod (which was actually for my birthday).
Other than that, we don't exchange Xmas gifts, but we sure enjoyed sharing our famous turkey-italiano pizza with the rest of the family.
Turkey
Smoked Venison salami
mushrooms
red onions
red, yellow and orange peppers/capsicums
basil pesto
pasta sauce
feta cheese
paremsan cheese
kalamata olivesDec 27, 2008 at 11:15 am #1466710A modest and UL Christmas for me, I got a Stick Pic and it’s only going to add 11 grams to my base weight. I’m hoping this will generate some family interest in my solo hiking pictures since the prevailing comment seems to be: “there’s never any people in your pictures!”
Dec 27, 2008 at 11:39 am #1466714Allison, dont you know the way to a mans heart is through his stomach?!
stop with the teasing already, that pizza is making me drool!
I got no gear related gifts, only thing i can use while camping is a bag of white choco covered coffee beans. And some free time to go hiking, the best gift of all.Dec 27, 2008 at 12:58 pm #1466729Oh, yeah, ya gotta have sun-dried tomatoes on your pizza too.
You are quite right Michael- the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, and the bestest gift of all is the time to pursue our outdoor interests.
I also got a tee-shirt. It has a picture of an old (NZ) forest on it, with the words "Native Trees-Where Bigger Really IS Better". It's a size too big, but with all the pizza I've been eating I will soon fill it in!
