Hi guys,

I was thinking that there must be someone out there that has come up with a way to make inflating an air matrass night in night out on long trips less of a drag. Anyone have any ideas?

Also wondering why hasn't manufacturers installed LARGE deflating ports to make packing them up quicker/easier?

1) Cut down "Instaflator" (search BLP for it)

2) I use the Exped PillowPump.

Weight! – Expend eliminated their exhaust port. In and Out are the same.

Regarding pad deflation, the Nemo Cosmo has a giant deflation valve that deflates the pad almost instantaneously. I wish the Exped pads had these…at least the heavier car camping pads.

I'm not sure if the lightweight Cosmo pads have this valve, but the regular Cosmo does.

18 breaths an 55 sec to inflate regular exlite
12 and 30 or so for short exlite

doesnt get any easier IMO. Part of easy is not fiddling with other items, etc.

Compactor bag worked really well for my short XLite. One bag full, then topped off with my lungs. I can't blow it up all the way with my lungs because I get really lightheaded no matter what. So the compactor bag works for me.

In spite of catching quite of bit of crap from some of my fellow UL hikers, I often carry the little pump that Thermorest makes. I HATE blowing up a pad at the end of a long day.

I have an Instaflator.
Less fuss than "my" rubber band/trash bag version but a bit of a pain ,in some areas, to buy.

Thanks heaps for the video but it doesn't say the procedure of making the unit. I am guessing you tape inside and outside of the plastic bag in the same area then you cut a round hole and mark it. Yeah? Tape is to stop plastic tearing at the hole?

Not really sure why you would respond with this when clearly this is nothing close to what I asked for.

But thanks for your time.

Have a nice day

I have one of these. Same weight as a schnozzola sack for a larger NeoAir.

https://www.camp-tek.com

It was rebranded by NeoAir as well. Found it in a local sport store. It does not work for Exped.

Thermarest Neoair Camper SV

This is not available until next year, and not ultralight, but it will be interesting to see if it spreads to lighter weight pads.

Personally, I use Exped mats with the Schnozzle bag, and I’m very happy with that for inflation. The Schozzle bag also doubles as a pack liner. Deflation could be a bit faster, though, so I can get going in the morning more quickly.

Neo air pump, works for the thermarest pads and with a bit of fiddling with the rubber end can also inflate the Exped ones. Weighs little and a real luxury at the end of a long hard day to have it inflate the pad whilst heating up water for a coffee or soup

I have a camptek pump I just bought. We use a regular and large neoair. The pump is slow… painfully slow.
Slow enough that I get tired of waiting on it and use my breath anyway.
I wish there were power settings so I could put it on low and conserve battery for longer trips (like it is now) or I could turn it up and have it full quicker but not as many times per battery.

I think it'll fill up like 15 pads before it dies? Maybe double the power and have it only last seven.

If we are going for a week 6 nights x2 pads = 12 inflations im probably not gonna carry those three ounces. But for a two or three nighter I want the luxury.

It's so slow it's almost pointless unless you have lung issues

I wonder how one of those party balloon pumps would work? Cheap enough. You might need to trim the tip and add some fatter hose to meld with valve on your pad.

I had never seen or heard of one of these and then I'm on a trip, I look up and I see this:

Inflating a neoair with a bag

I about died laughing.

Piper, that looks like the Instaflator, a couple of which I just ordered (one for a friend, as well).

I used BPL’s wonderful search feature and didn’t find anything like THIS, which looks as if it could be modified easily. I’ve used the same type of gizmo (although slightly heavier) quite a few times to inflate road bike/MTB tires and they work quite well. But because the CO2 molecules leak out more quickly than good ol’ air it might not do well with air mats.

And yet, you can leave it there and go do something else not requiring heavy breathing while it works… kind of like the gravity filter I use around camp to store water until it needs filtering, there are ways to use it that don't result in impatient fussing.
