I feel like BG right now…

"For the previous poster to make the absolute statement that all "Those UL 6 oz jackets GENERALLY don't let water IN"

Um, I said GENERALLY, not ABSOLUTELY. of course there are exceptions, and bad jackets, and bad craftsmanship. I was saying that it was not the NORM for them to do so…this is NOT an absolute statement, by the way. In that case I would have said ALL 6oz jackets NEVER leak…or NO 6 oz jackets EVER leak.

and that's not what I said.

In my limited experience (not at BG level : ) the problem with 6 ounce jacket is that there's no lining, so the membrane absorbs body oil, delaminates, which loses it's waterproofness. The lifetime is limited.

If you don't use it very often or can afford to replace it occasionally, that works okay.

I am curious to hear your insights on the Flashpoint once you've had some time with it. I wanted a lighter weight shell to supplement my heavier neoshell right around the time that the Rab initially hit the market. The only intel I could find on it were some blurbs from blogs about the Outdoor Retailer show. I was suprised to see the weight considering it was labled as a 3 layer. I found mixed statements on the actual material they were using and could never really figure that out at the time–opting for a Marmot Essence, also considering the big price differential.

So in regards to this thread, I do believe the Flashpoint may be the lightest 3L on the market as Jennifer initially suggested. I am curious how well it will hold up and it's breathability compared to the big name membranes. I do agree with the prior recent posts that there is no magical unicorn to beat physics. But some fabrics are at least a little better than others. Just have to get past the market hype.

In cold conditions, it's a lot easier to regulate sweat (by unzipping) than it is to keep cold rain or sleet out of a leaking jacket. Another reason why I prefer a 3 layer jacket.
