I wanted this jacket, or something fairly similar like a Marmot Quasar, but the Marmot and Arc'teryx jackets I've tried in the last couple of years all run long in the body and sleeves, while tight at the neck and through the chest and shoulders for me without sizing up. Great for the taller folks, but not so fantastic for short and stout ones.
Got a Backcountry Hadron instead, which also has a drawcord hem, and is shorter plus cut bigger overall with shorter sleeves. The quality is lower than either of the above, and the handwarmer pockets aren't zippered, but the feature set is basically the same at a lower cost. My size Large is 8.0oz and quite lofty for 2oz of 850 fill.

Gary,

Assuming a good fit, these will be equivalent warmth garments (as perceived by the average user). There are feature and efficiency trade-offs that were discussed; thus, this information was collected in one thread to easily allow each person to make an informed choice as to what option best matches their set of objectives.

According to Marmot, the Quasar is 13.1 ounces in mens medium with 2.9 ounces of down.
That's not very impressive at all.
My mirage is like 3 times as puffy and weighs 12.7 ounces, and it's cheaper.
Literally no reason at all to buy that jacket.

Sorry, getting off topic here.

I am always looking for small volume, high loft down jackets. I just got a new Icarus with 4.5oz of 800 DWR treated down. It weighs a bit at 12oz, but handles down to about 32F with no problem. The sleeves are a bit long, but lets me slide my hands inside for warmth. I am forever loosing gloves/mittens. It is also small enough to wear to bed. Between my jacket and bag, I can sleep at around 25F with summer gear! With the old jacket, that weighted 10.1oz, I was awake every half hour or so when temps dropped to 27F. Also, being fully insulated with down, it compresses really small. It fits into my sleep bag along with my long johns and socks. I used it around campus at -20F. It worked for up to 30 minutes.

Anyway, 2 major complaints from me.
It is not fully down insulated making it a larger bulk, or, subject to degradation over a few years. I value hi-function, small packing volume a lot, Coreloft ain't in the cards. Even if they are roughly equiv, new.

The jacket is ridiculously overpriced at $319. I paid $119 (on sale) for the Icarus, it is warmer suiting my needs/comfort better, includes DownTek or equiv. At 12oz, the weight is OK when almost 2/3 the 4oz difference is *down insulation.* (The Cerium SL actually weighs around 8oz in XL to fit me.) Backcountry lists only 1.8oz of goose down.

On Sale at $318 except snot green:

Nope, not interested.

Don't trust any of Marmot's listed weights. I've seen several items way off spec.

I have the Cerium LT jacket + Cerium LT Vest. It's the best fitted jacket and the best fitted vest in the puffy-world I've owned so far.

One critique: The collar could be higher. It's better in my Crux halo pullover (old version – don't buy the new ones, fit is terrible).

I really like that it's well-stuffed with down (the LT version that is…sorry for a slight thread drift).

Gary, I'll be able to weigh it tomorrow. It's lying in my sons bedroom…and he is sleeping. Very inconvenient – sorry.

A google search shows that you yourself have already started threads on this jacket already. Interest was low because you didn't put some ridiculous stupid clickbait title on the thread. Have you gone anywhere in this jacket yet? Seen it not rip on the trail since that seems to be its' weakness?

I don't think you liked the first response, so you started a new thread…
"Not an answer (sorry), but my warmth has more to do with what I had for dinner than +/- a couple ounces of down. This is one area where the more important differences are durability of the shell, initial cost, and how sustainable the manufacturing practices of the companies are."

Really?

I really wish trolls didn't exist at all, but I guess it's just a fact of life.

I know right, you better ban me right away because I am such a horrible troll that has damaged your community. Oh, the horror.

Why again did you use such a stupid clickbait thread title? Forums that have more active moderation staffs generally do not allow those and consider them very annoying.

PostedMay 6, 2015 at 1:36 pm

Well, most people don't like low quality thread titles because it wastes their time and makes the forum harder to find information on. Any more questions?

"Most people don't like low quality thread titles because it wastes their time and makes the forum harder to find information on."

Couldn't agree more. It's not Buzzfeed. Give threads clear and obvious titles. (Especially when you keep making new threads about the same thing, apparently solely to get someone to agree with you that your new jacket is great. If you like it, wear it.)

> WHY hasn't this forum been ALL OVER this jacket??!!

'Cause they haven't sent me one for review (yet).
Give them a reminder?

Cheers

"Who gives a $#!+?"

Me, Ian. How else can a guy read CHAFF in the main Forum, without having to wade thru extra layers of clicking to get there?

alright, so Gary is kinda prone to title hyperbole (with memorable thread titles also for Altaplex and XSUL).

But really, in the scheme of things is that so bad? I'll admit, it does provoke me to try to poke a hole in what he's saying. Still, he has experience and useful observations.

I'm with Eric (or eric, of poofay fame)

Those synthetic bits really do undermine the whole concept.

The "Big War" IMO is next fall when the DownTek/DriDown/whatever controversy heats up.

In the meantime, Montbell poofays at about 1/2 dead bird prices are pretty attractive. And EB/LLB are coming on strong with some really valid contenders. I used-and-abused an EB DownTek hoodie this past winter and was seriously impressed.

I'm not (and, I suspect, a lot of others aren't) going to get twisted into a pretzel over 2 oz for cold weather gear that actually performs.
