Yeah, combining synthetic and down is a problem, because synthetic wears out after a few years (or whatever) but down should last more or less forever.

So, if you have a garment with down and synthetic, after a few years, the synthetic part will have lost it's loft, but the down part is still good, but you'll have to replace the entire garment.

Now, if you could replace just the synthetic part it might work.

The jacket seems to be a copy of a Patagonia down jacket. Nothing earth shattering here but the jacket is boring, that is why no one is raving about it. Plus the name isn't cool like "Ghost Whisperer" etc.

I was just thinking (well more or less, I'm only halfway through my first coffee) that a down body with synthetic sleeves (the first part that wets out on me) might not be a horrible idea, or I could just wear a down vest.

I still wear the same women's size XXX large Outdoor Research fleece jacket that I happened across in 2004. It's singed, weighs about 10 oz, is worn and perfect.

A puffy jacket would be destroyed by me within two seasons or after one particularly overgrown / class 3 trail.

Hi Alexander, I think most people are just using them for when they stop hiking and are making camp. Like you said, they are fragile, but they're also usually too warm to hike in.
