REI Sale 03/27/15 – What are you getting?

Well the temptation was too great. I now have a size M Synmat Hyperlite on the way. I was looking to buy a 3 season mat and the weight and packability of the Hyperlite pushed me over the edge. The computer here is saying I'll get this by April the 4th, but I have my doubts.

Campsaver called Exped for me and they were told another 3-4 weeks due to delays at the port. I don't know if REI will be getting them any sooner.

A few days ago REI CS said they'd be in stock somewhere around April 6th and they showed as "Pre-Order" on the site. Today when I ordered the Downmat Winterlite, the 'Pre-Order' banner was gone and my shipping estimate is April 1. Curiously, only the Med and L/Wide are available, but not the M/Wide.

I was very close to getting the Synmat Winterlite instead, but it's not as warm as the Xtherm going strictly by R-value and I like snow camping. That said, I am curious about how warm they are in comparison in the real world.

I ordered the new Synmat Hyperlight from REI on Wednesday. I called to esquire about the shipping date and the lady on the phone said I could use my dividend and 20% coupon and I would receive it before the end of next week. It shipped from Washington State yesterday and will be here Tuesday.

I also ordered a Synmat Hyperlite, and got notice it shipped today. I've been using the Downmat UL 7 for a couple of years, but wanted something lighter and that packs down smaller.

I had been thinking about the Neoair, but I really like the Schnozzle Bag for inflation. The Synmats don't come with the bag, but the one from my Downmat will work. And now the Hyperlite is a bit lighter than the Neoair, and a bit wider (even in the normal width).

Plus, I had a good bit of dividend dollars from the REI Visa, so how could I resist?

Using the Downmat UL 7 for cold weather has me spoiled. Had a hard time getting comfortable with my Prolite small this week, since my back was bothering me, which made pulling the trigger on the Hyperlite that much easier. The fact that there's no weight penalty certainly didn't hurt, either.
I "need" it next Tues-Thurs, but it's not supposed to be here 'til the following Monday(4/6).
Maybe I'll survive :(

Next thing you know, I'll be buying the matching pillow…

It looks like I'll probably be trying to buy a pair of hyperlites. I have an EE accomplice that I still want to use, and currently join two UL 7s together for it. It may work better to join to hyperlites or it may work worse…though it would be about 9 oz difference to go to two hyperlites….

Let us know how the Accomplice works out and which pads you end up using it with. I've got my eyes on either the Accomplice or the two person quilt from Zpacks.

The main problem is that I haven't been able to find the foot width of the hyperlite? I know its curved, but they say the width is 20.5" even though the top is curved too….

I remember reading a review that said the MW version was around 18" in the mid thigh area. If you assume they use the same taper for the M, it would be around 14" mid thigh. Probably best to call exped and ask though.

O.K. I'm late to realizing that the synmat winterlite pad has down and a 4.9 r value,at the same weight essentially as an ul 7. But it tapers at the end. I'm wondering if anyone can comment on their experience of sleeping on a tapered pad. I do tend to turn from side to side a bit as I'm falling asleep. The medium wide adds about 6 ounces over the UL7, if I have that right. Maybe worth it.

Yeas ago I carried an exped downmat and really liked the warmth, but not the weight. The synmat ul 7 was a major weight improvement. Now, maybe I can have my cake and eat it too. (I wouldn't use this pad in winter.)

The synmat winterlite doesn't have down…its synthetic insulation. The downmat winterlite has down. And the synmat winterlite M is 14-14.3 oz (I've seen both specs), and the original UL 7 is 16 oz.

Edit: o.k. rei specs are: 14.3 ounces for the Med; 1 lb. 2.23 ounces for the Medium wide.

Well, fired up my 40 year old REI mebership for 20% off, a $50 dividend, $25 gift card, and another $55 in merchandise return credits, landed me a BA Copper Spur UL1 for $165… poles will be going off to Fibraplex for duping. Would like to get the tent's all-up weight at or below 2lbs.

Those new Exped mats look interesting. But the specs of the hyperlight appear to be virtually the same as the neoair xlite, only real difference is the baffle orientation. Also, the hyperlight looks like it narrows an awful lot at the head. Does anyone know of any obvious reason the hyperlight would be a better choice than the xlite?

o.k. so the dimensions of an Exped ul7 are: 72x20x2.8.

synmat winterlite M are: 71×20…no depth reported; assume 2.8

synmat winterlite Mwide: 71×25.5…no depth; assume 2.8…although we need to know!

Also, it's hard to tell about the tapering difference between the Medium and Medium wide. Does the medium wide NOT taper? that would be good for me.

I received my Medium Exped Synmat Hyperlight today. The mat weighs 11.9 ounces on my scale and the stuff sack and repair kit weigh 0.9 ounces. I'm a side sleeper so it's plenty wide and feels as comfy as my UL7. It's still a pain to get in the stuff sack so I think I'll just throw it in my Schnozzle bag with my quilt and keep the glue and patch in my repair kit.

Kate, could you let us know the foot width of the hyperlite? Like…the width right before it starts having a curve…which is where I think they get the 20.5" width near the head end.

The obvious reason for me IS the baffle orientation.
Strictly a matter of personal preference, but I find pads with "vertical" baffles like the Big Agnes Air Cores and Expeds noticeably more comfortable than the NeoAirs.

The width of the shoulder area (near the head) is 20.5". The area where it goes from eight to six baffles (hits me about the knee) is 17". The foot is 14".

It's light but not UL but I think it will work for us – sometimes 3 people but usually 2. It weighs 4 lbs 13 oz from the store, but will see what happens when I start trimming labels and bags. It looks sweet though – can't wait to try it out! It is probably the easiest setup I have ever had in a tent, so incredibly intuitive and easy.

Nothing like a new tent and all the promise it holds. I still have my first one (not the first I camped in, just the first that belonged to me and was my solo tent in Denali). It was an REI half dome,1989, and The first night I slept without the fly in Yosemite in late March. Cold but a beautiful starry night! Must weigh 6 pounds or more but I just can't let it go., even if I never set it up again.
