Why Do All Backpackers Use Dr. Bronner's Soap

But what got you all to buy it the first time? Marketing?

In the mid 1970’s it was about the only liquid biodegradable soap made. There was no “marketing” per se, it was more a word of mouth deal. I found it in a health food store, and I don’t ever remember it being available in an outdoor-gear type store until later that decade.

But what got you all to buy it the first time? Marketing? Thinking like Eric?

I truly don’t remember exactly when, where, or why. But it was in the ‘70s.

That’s actually a pretty good summation of the entire decade… :)

If i remember right, a good friend who did a lot of backpacking recommended it. I had tried CampSuds and didn’t like that it felt more like laundry detergent than soap. After starting Dr Bs, I haven’t ever felt a need to try something else.

as for it being somehow related to marketing, has anyone ever seen an ad? Ive never seen or heard of a Dr Bs advertisement, not even a flashy end cap at the store. Maybe they have some in whole food healthy living mags? I suppose if you consider the endless reading, esp on the bigger bottles, that might persuade some. But that wasn’t why I started using it.

I earlier included a couple links about the company’s history. Interesting reading IMO.

I read the company history and particularly about DR Bronner. While I don’t like the soap and don’t agree with some of his views, I have to admire someone with conviction and who stayed true to values. In a world where only greed seems to matter, pledging to treat workers fairly is pretty rare. Too bad I can’t  stand the stuff!

I stopped in their place in San Diego years ago. Use to get Caterpillar parts a couple of doors down.

And if you don’t think the moral ABCs on the label isn’t marketing, well…

I haven’t read the whole thread but I use Bronners because it’s a liquid biodegradable solution that is available to me. I can’t stand the smell of most soaps perfumes and find the Bronners baby unscented variety is very unobtrusive.
