I am 5’11” tall and I have a regular and long size sleeping bag. The regular length ThermARest fits up to 6′. I am thinking I should get a long as the ThermARest, I would think, should be as longest as the longest sleeping bag you might use it with potentially.

Am I right?

Thanks.

How do you sleep?  I’m 6’5″ and use a regular.  As a side sleeper I’m almost never stretched out full length, so regular is more than enough.  I do put my sit pad (a 12″ by 18″ rectangle of closed-cell foam) on the ground at the end of the pad so there’s a bit of insulation down there if my feet hang off the end once in a while.

I do tend to sleep on my side the majority of the time. I always thought that perhaps it should be as long as the longest bag. Apparently not.

Thanks!

All the larges/longs/talls are also wider. Do you want the increased width? Are you 20″ wide

I’ve never heard Thermarest pads being referred to as “tall” but as small or regular or large etc.  I might be wrong though as it’s hard to keep up with Thermarest’s info and near constant name changes.

First there was the plain old NeoAir, then the NeoAir All Season and XTherm and XLite and NeoAir Trekker and NeoAir Venture WV and NeoAir Camper and NeoAir Voyager and NeoAir Dream etc.

Most ULers here probably prefer the shortest pad possible and use clothing or gear to support their legs for comfort and cold.

I prefer the large version in all my Thermarests because I like the 25 inch width, and these only come in size large for their backpacking versions.

I’m 6’1.5″.  I use regular Therm-a-rest which is 6′ long.  I sleep on my side.  I normally pull my feet up a little regardless so they’re still on the pad.  Occasionally I extend my feet off the pad.  If it’s really cold I’ll puul my feet up a little to stay warmer.

I’m 5’10” and switched from a Regular to Large NeoAir just for the width.  I didn’t like my elbows falling off the sides of the pad when sleeping on my back.  Those with narrower shoulders or those who primarily sleep on their side may not have this same issue.

the neoairs xlite have 1-2″ less of USABLE width than their spec suggests due to the horizontal baffles and the tapered shape … and the higher height makes it much more noticeable

the xlite small has MUCH less USABLE width than say a 20″ wide foam pad as its even more tapered

make sure you buy from somewhere that takes returns as it takes a night sleep on it to make sure the width can work for you

I am 5’9″ 170lbs and love the large X therm for the extra width.  I mostly sleep on my sides but toss and turn and really appreciate the comfort the extra width provides whether on my back, side, or stomach.

I think I will end up taking the Long size. I’ll be getting the relatively new EvoLite Plus from Therm-A-Rest. The Long is 77x25x2.5 where as the Regular is 72x20x2.5. I wear a 42 suit, so I guess that means I’ve got a 21 in wide chest, which the Long would accomodate nicely and keep my feet from going over the edge. And I don’t mind if there happens to be more sleeping pad than sleeping bag either for the times I do use it. And with my REI discount, it is a pretty good deal.
