I have heard the Yosemite fire smoke is all the way down to Mammoth ? is this true ?
any updates on the Whitney Portal fire ? completely out yet ?
All fires in CA have information here, with a helpful map
You can also check Mammoth and Yosemite webcams; the amount of smoke varies by time of day and wind direction. Right now Yosemite is awful, Mammoth less so but still reasonably smoky.
For air quality, check here:

I know one group that was hiking last weekend NOBO where a person had to leave at Mammoth due to issues with air quality.
I’m in Mammoth. This morning it was really bad. It’s currently not terrible, but not great either. Yesterday was fine – we even had some blue skies. It’s been really variable and somewhat unpredictable depending on the time of day and the direction of the winds. They had said today would be nicer, but it’s been the worst yet so far.
thanks for all your responses.
I’ll be in Mammoth this weekend and heading south in the mountains, so I guess I’ll find out first hand if its bearable.
Good luck; I’m not terribly optimistic. I was supposed to be in Bridgeport area all next week, but things don’t look good. At this moment, webcams in Yosemite and Mammoth all have pretty much zero visibility, the worst I’ve seen them. Air quality index in Mammoth Lakes actually not too bad right now, but forecast is for really bad around 22:00 tonight (according to Breezometer).
Ken T, Thanks for that Cal Fire site link.
I bookmarked it B/C our youngest daughter lives in Thousand Oaks and I want to know if our route to her is threatened or if her place is threatened.
From the BPL archives,
I’m in Mammoth now; looks and smells OK
Setting off for a 10 day SOBO PCT section in a couple of days.
Was going to go Tahoe south a week ago, but the Donnell fire changed all that.
This site shows current fire and smoke patterns. I believe it to be the most useful of the different sites. You must select the area map of your interest:
