Ursack with Nylobarrier bag, rather than OPSak

I know the traditional pairing is to use an OPSak inside an Ursack … I have long used a Nylobarrier bag (from what was LiteTrail) inside a dry sack as a overnight, hangable bear bag.

Am I looking past any big issues in considering a Nylobarrier bag rather than an OPsak with an Ursack? I just really prefer the ease of the Nylobarrier and the lighter, more flexible plastic it is made from makes seem like it would be easier to pack efficiently than the OPSak.

Thoughts?

Fill the nylo bags (or OP Sak) up with fresh ground coffee, let it sit overnight, then take a whiff.

Then maybe revisit the system.

I’ve now moved on to 5mil Mylar for lining my Ursaks, which is the food industry gold standard for vapor impermeability.

I know our local grocery store, Winco, sells large mylar bags that will fit inside of five gallon buckets for food storage, but I believe they have to be heat sealed.  Do your bags have a zip closure or do you just twist and fold the top of it?

@discopants – yes, they have a zip closure.

@dpnoll
– the bags hold up better than OP Saks, because they have a more durable zipper and zipper seam to the bag (the two main OP Sak failure points in my experience).

You can order them directly from sorbentsystems.com. I use Model #16MFS18OZE (“16×18-inch Mylar Foil Pouch w/ZipSeal”). Go to this page, then search the page for the model # (“16MFS18OZE”) to find them. They can be ordered in batches of 50. It would be great if a local cottage mfr would pick these up and sell them at retail! (hint, hint!)

I use two of them side by side in an Ursack S29. Seems to fit better than stacking them, or trying to fill one up to its seam-bursting capacity.

Thanks for the mylar tip Ryan.  I’ve wondered about them…I know a lot of emergency preparedness sites sell them as they’re typically used for home dehydrated food storage.

I’ve been double bagging with nylofume but I’m increasingly finding I can only get a trip or two out of the bags before they tear.

Mylar is what they use for chips. You never smell Doritos before you open the bag.

$75 for 50 pouches. Ouch!

I found them on for $45…still more than I personally would like to spend on bags considering I have been able to use OPsaks for a year at a time without issue…plus I will admit it’s nice to be able to see the contents without dumping the bag out.

Here’s 25 bags for $30.48 on Ebay:

Wondering if it is too late to get in on this deal or not?  If not, let me know and I would take a handful.
