I’ve been using ExOfficio boxer briefs and the newer sport mesh boxer briefs. I once made the mistake of wearing under armour boxer briefs and the stitching made a nasty welt in a place that doesn’t much like welts…

For normal everyday wear, they are are great. Excellent travel underwear.

However, I’ve noticed that throughout the summer months, when the heat is high and the humidity is too, they get wet and stay wet; sometimes through the night. I have noticed the sport mesh boxer brief does a better job of preventing chaffing between the legs when wet. This is because it’s very snug in all those areas…I do typically apply an anti-chaffing product as a preventative measure.

So, I’ve considered 2 things:

  1. My pants/shorts are not breathable enough so the moisture can’t transfer
  2. The underwear themselves are not good at drying quickly

So, I did some research and found an online review:

http://www.outdoorgearlab.com/Travel-Underwear-Reviews

I’ve also read as much as I could from previous posts on here and product reviews online.

I was interested in the fast drying reported for the Icebreakers, but there were quite a few Amazon reviews that stated the seam that goes up the middle of the butt tends to make a mess of things in a sensitive area, so I’ve been concerned.

Plus the SmartWool and IceBreakers are insanely expensive for underwear. I thought I was splurging on the ExOfficio!

As another option, I’ve also switched to lightweight mesh breathable running shorts to see if that will improve airflow and drying over the typical zip off Columbia pants.

Will the Icebreakers cause some scary issues with the seam in the back? Do they really dry faster? Are they worth the money? How about the SmartWool 150? Are those worth the money? The 150 material is so flimsy I worry about it holding up.

Have you considered or tried going ‘commando’?  I change into my dry boxers when I am done hiking for the day.

Did a few responses just disappear? Like the one talking about the Patagonia Cap 1 briefs?

The RAB Dryflo 80 may be durable enough. I didn’t mention that I own one pair of Montbell superlight mesh underpants. I don’t see them on their website anymore. I got them just before the summer, so I can’t comment on them in a full range of conditions nor durability. The worst case I wore them on was a couple of days at 100 to 110 F and dry, and they performed well. So far I am happy. But I can’t speak for durability.

I stopped wearing them as the temps cooled off, since I bought them with the idea of using them in the summer, and since they seem hard to come by, I want to save them for next season…

Can I just say that I’m highly amused by the things we talk about with strangers online? That said, I’ve never tried merino boxers because I assumed they’d dry slowly like merino shirts.

Im a very happy wearer of Ex Officio GnG Sport Mesh as well as UA Boxerjocks in the meshy variant.

I can’t begin to imagine going commando.

the thinner and more open the weave of any base layer, the faster itll dry and wick away moisture … and the less water itll retain when soaking wet (from rain or sweat)

synthetics dry faster than merino under humid conditions … synth/merino blends dry decently fast somewhere between the two

the best ive found yet is the dead bird phase SL … the problem is that they are $$$$ (even at 50% off) and not too durable …

but if its constantly soaking wet … you bet im bringing em (under cold wet conditions the durability matters less as youll almost never wear em by themselves)

;)

I can’t speak to the boxers but I have two pairs of the Ex-Officio “Give and Go” travel undies and they are very slow to dry (washing one pair and wearing the other, the washed pair won’t be dry by the time you want to switch them out the following day unless you are in a very hot, dry climate) and IMO they quickly pick up unwanted odors and stink. Nice idea, but a fail (IMO) in application. I’ll try Merino next time.

REI boxer briefs.

I like ’em and nobody yet has had the nerve to complain, for what that’s worth. IME they dry quickly enough.

I bought exactly 1 merino product (Icebreaker T) and found it didn’t work for me… quick wear and slow dry. But it did make my wallet substantially lighter!

Merino –  no.

exofficio boxer briefs – yes.

IMHO – YMMV – HYOH – etc. etc.

Don’t know how readily available Odlo (originally a brand from Norway, currently settled in Switzerland) is in the US, but I’ve used their synthetic ‘Boxer Evolution X-Light’ for a fair number of trips now.

Dry very quickly and IMO very comfortable. No problems with chaffing. I’ve had problems with that in the past though, with some cheaper synthetic boxers.

Have used them on both very warm alpine summer trips and chilly shoulder season hikes.

The best thing about them is their weight: 34 grams/1,2 ounces for a men’s medium.

They are quite durable in my opinion. Let’s say I’ve worn them two months in total, they still look like new.

Duluth Trading has both women’s and men’s underwear in material that is identical to the Ex Officio underwear, for a few bucks cheaper.  Can’t speak to the men’s, but the women’s underwear is cut a little more generously, for better coverage.

I wear exofficio give-n-go boxers on almost a daily basis, and wear them for my backpacking trips as well.

I bought 4 or 5 pairs several years ago and they are wonderful.  But this spring I bought 4 more pairs on deep discount from Sierra Trading Post, and the newer ones appear to have a slightly different material.  They are lighter, they seem to dry slower, and they bunch up and wrinkle in all the wrong places.  I avoid wearing them even at the office.

WOW! 35 grams! Did you weigh it?

ExOfficio boxers are at 80 grams for M!

Rohan Ultra Silver Trunks are at 40 grams for M but they a bit more expensive (20 GBP).

I am a Ex Offieceio(sp) Give N Go boxer brief user as well and have been for years. Prior to them I had tried wickers and Patagonia.

I have looked into some of the wool blend boxers and will be going back to Alaska next year so Eric PNW (cold/wet) suggestion of the Phase is meaningful. I will be wearing the same pair for 12 days.

The OR Echo boxer briefs look interesting too- anyone tried them?

I did. I couldn’t believe it to be honest.

They’re not that cheap, though. I could get a deal trough my job but they retail at 29,95 EUR.

I wear Ex Officio boxers when traveling and EO boxer briefs when hiking – they are comfortable, durable, haven’t smelled bad, are easy to wash, and have always dried in plenty of time for my needs.  They are often on sale at various sites at good prices, especially if you go through Active Junky (no pun intended). I traveled a month in NZ with two pairs of each and probably could have got by with only one pair of each.  The other day I realized that I had been wearing the same pair of boxers for a couple weeks because I do the typical guy thing of smelling my undies before I put them on to make sure they’re “clean”.  Even though they didn’t smell, I figured a wash every couple weeks isn’t a bad thing.

I have worn the DTC underwear – it’s a bit heavier than EO, but is also much less expensive. Performance was about equal to EO, but the waistband is definitely a little heavier.

I bought a pair of Armachillos for use in AZ, but have not tried them out yet.

BTW – the current sale at DTC is  Buy two or more Buck Naked underwear for just $15 each; free shipping with any $50 order through 11/11/16 with promo code T16PC5

I saw this at Massdrop

https://www.massdrop.com/buy/saxx-blacksheep
SAXX Blacksheep Merino Boxers & Long Johns
29.99

Easy-Wearing Wool Underwear

Ten years ago, SAXX Underwear Co. set out to make the ultimate underwear—a base layer that’s supremely comfortable and easy to move in. The Blacksheep is just that, recently updated with the softest temperature-regulating merino wool on the market and a splash of spandex for that just-right stretch. Merino wool keeps you warm in cold weather and cool in warm weather, and because it’s naturally antibacterial and odor-resistant, you can stretch an extra day out of your pair when you need to. Finally, SAXX’s patented BallPark pouch keeps everything in place, with a hammock-shaped construction, no exposed stitching, and mesh panels to prevent skin-against-skin friction.

Note: At checkout, you’ll have your choice between the Blacksheep Boxer Fly (base price) and the Blacksheep Long John Fly (+ $20). Both styles are available in black heather and charcoal heather, and sizes S – XXL.
