I’m finally getting around to ordering an ULA pack, based on recommendations for packs for men with long torsos. When it comes to backpacks, my most important criteria is how it handles the load. This involves the frame as well as compression. I tend to pack things relatively loosely and rely on the pack itself to keep things close to my back (avoiding unnecessary torque).
This is somewhat of a two part inquiry, as I haven’t completely ruled out buying another ULA pack. The Catalyst just seems too big for my needs. I don’t mind the extra weight (especially if it rides better) but it seems like I wouldn’t need the extra space most of the time, if ever. I rarely use bear canisters (although that might change).
The Ohm could work, but my experience with similar straps is that it is tough to cinch them down across the entire pack. The strap on the Circuit (similar to that of the Catalyst) seems great. It appears as if that is the only strap though. A comment from a while ago suggests you can order the pack with a second strap, right above the pocket*. Can I still do that? Is there some other form of compression down low? Maybe the one strap is adequate.
I should add that my base weight is under ten pounds. I go on a variety of trips (overnighters to weeklong) and the food I carry is not especially efficient. Thus my weight can vary quite a bit. I’m also not particularly tolerant of heavy loads. I’m sure there are times when I’m carrying a load that many would find enjoyable and I find barely tolerable.
*It is possible that this was always a custom modification, as the post was all about such things.
