ULA Circuit Compression Straps

I’m finally getting around to ordering an ULA pack, based on recommendations for packs for men with long torsos. When it comes to backpacks, my most important criteria is how it handles the load. This involves the frame as well as compression. I tend to pack things relatively loosely and rely on the pack itself to keep things close to my back (avoiding unnecessary torque).

This is somewhat of a two part inquiry, as I haven’t completely ruled out buying another ULA pack. The Catalyst just seems too big for my needs. I don’t mind the extra weight (especially if it rides better) but it seems like I wouldn’t need the extra space most of the time, if ever. I rarely use bear canisters (although that might change).

The Ohm could work, but my experience with similar straps is that it is tough to cinch them down across the entire pack. The strap on the Circuit (similar to that of the Catalyst) seems great. It appears as if that is the only strap though. A comment from a while ago suggests you can order the pack with a second strap, right above the pocket*. Can I still do that? Is there some other form of compression down low? Maybe the one strap is adequate.

I should add that my base weight is under ten pounds. I go on a variety of trips (overnighters to weeklong) and the food I carry is not especially efficient. Thus my weight can vary quite a bit. I’m also not particularly tolerant of heavy loads. I’m sure there are times when I’m carrying a load that many would find enjoyable and I find barely tolerable.

*It is possible that this was always a custom modification, as the post was all about such things.

[EDIT: I had the names of the Circuit and Catalyst backwards in the text. ]

Ask ULA.  They’ve always been responsive and helpful for me and other ULA owners I know.

Ditto that^

They sound less open to modifications and customizations than before on their site but I haven’t ordered anything from them in a couple years so I don’t know for sure.

I did not find the side compression straps on my Catalyst or Circuit to be particularly effective. I prefer the side compression on Ohm because it compresses over a larger area. I’ve used it on my kid’s Ohm once or twice and a CDT I ordered with Ohm compression. I should disclose that I’m not particularly inclined to crank side compression really hard and if you want to do that you might like the straps better, particularly if they will add another set of straps.

I contacted ULA, and they were very fast and very helpful. Peter offered to discuss this over the phone, but since I’m hard of hearing, we sent emails. After a little back and forth, this a snippet of what he wrote (in case others might find it useful):

It sounds like the Circuit may be the sweet spot for you and we can definitely add a second compression strap on each side-which runs $20 for both.

Given your interest in comfort (or aversion to discomfort), The Circuit handles 25+ lbs better as it includes an aluminum stay, offers a more padded back panel and spacer mesh on the backpanel.

I went ahead and ordered the pack with the extra straps and it looks great. It was only three days from when I sent the first email to when I had my pack. Obviously I got a bit lucky (I’m sure there are times when it takes longer). But still, that is extraordinary customer support, and excellent service overall. The pack looks great (of course) and (to get back to my original concern from a different thread) the large fits quite well.

Overall just an excellent experience.

I’m glad to hear they are still doing custom requests and that their customer service remains so strong. Enjoy the pack!

They may be amenable to custom work especially as fall approaches, but it may require buying one’s own materials and shipping it to them. Earlier this year,  I met a couple with ULA packs with some sort of very strong mesh.  Their story was they ordered the mesh elsewhere after talking to ULA and sent it there for their perfect thru packs.  Pretty sure if it doesn’t affect their manufacturing process (messing with patterns etc..), it’s doable.

I wouldn’t delay ..
