I recently purchased a unique rolltop pouch from a cottage vendor on Etsy, “Finding Trail”.  The owner, Amber, worked with me to modify the attachment loops to specifically fit my MLD pack. The hipbelt pouch carries a huge volume with no zipper to fight.  This is a fantastic product, exceptional craftsmanship, and a bargain at $17-$22,  depending on material choice.

I have no affiliation, just wanted to share a great product.

Got pics of what she did and how it looks on your pack?

Fully rolled, it’s about the size of a normal hipbelt pouch. Unrolled, much like an extention collar on you backpack. Good for camera, snacks, wind shell. I asked for the loop modification because I wanted the pouch a bit more towards the front for easy access. I had it made in Ultra200 because I wanted to see what all the hubbub was about.

It’s funny, I hadn’t even realized I’d been working with a fellow BPL’er until this morning. I feel very honored that Russell liked the design enough to share it here. I enjoyed my own field testing with it, but I’m a little biased. To have someone else validate it is a great feeling. I’ve been making them to order, to allow for a bit of “tweaking,” since hip belts are so varied.

I’d actually ordered the Ultra fabric for the same reason – to see what the hubbub was about. Definitely some tough stuff. In fact, the only thing that’s stopped me from ordering more of it is how tough it is to cut. Lol. I’ll have to invest in a hot knife now!

I like the concept – I usually hike with my hipbelt pockets unzipped because I can’t open them by myself while wearing the pack.  I keep snacks in my pockets so it wouldn’t be a big deal if I lost something, but so far I haven’t.

Here’s my question for you:  Can you open and close it while wearing your pack?

Yep. I could, anyway. In fact, the only problem with my field tests was that it wanted to slide off when I was putting my pack back on. A loop toggle fixed that. Shrinking the elastic a little will probably fix that too (an untested theory, in my case).

But I digress, this is not my thread. I’d only intended to say thank you, and I have.

Kevin – I took another photo from the back side to show you the 1.5″ loops Amber modified. I wanted the pouch further towards the front specially to be able to open it without taking off my pack, bot not too far as to be impacted by my gait. The picture is black on black but I think you can get the idea. Hope this helps.

I’m only answering because there’s a select few in the world who could give their opinion (3, including myself so far). I’m using the un-modified version and didn’t personally notice any “bouncing.” I hope @RussW can chime in on his experience with his modified version. I sort of “loaded” mine with the heavier stuff on the bottom.

Pretty much the same as Amber. Heavier stuff on the bottom and light on top. I carried some food, my phone and an on and off Houdini. It wasn’t directly in front of my leg, but about 10 o’clock where I could easily access. Didn’t notice a distracting bounce.
