I actually just picked up a cheap ($1.00) ladle at Target to take to potlucks (“eating on the ground” if you’re from the south).  Here’s the link.

Mine weighs 63 grams (2.2 ounces) and holds just under 2/3 cup.  You could make it lighter by shortening the handle.

Thanks, guys. I might take Kevin’s advice and just pick up a cheap plastic ladle and cut it down to size so it fits in my pack better. I see that Snow Peak make a foldable one but it’s more expensive and it’s not really that deep; more like a wide spoon.

Check the cookware section of an Asian grocery store.  Often, they have inexpensive utensils that are made from thinner materials; this is a drawback that can be beneficial to us.  I’ve bought forks, tongs, pans, pots, lids, ladles, scoops, funnels and all other kinds of things in their cookware sections, all of which are light, strong and serviceable, and not made in an artificially heavy way that appeals to western consumers.  You can also stock up on ramen while you’re there.

In case anyone finds this post later on, just closing it out by saying I ended up buying this GSI Pivot Spoon.

Thanks for the update – I’m not interested in the spoon, but the Pivot Tongs caught my eye.  I’ve been doing steak on my Vargo Ti Bifold Grill on my first night out on recent trips and for tongs I’ve been using a little U-shaped gizmo that Vargo used to sell and two Ti sporks (it’s the only use I’ve ever had for sporks).  They’re okay, but these tongs look a lot nicer.  I ordered them (cheaper direct from GSI than from Amazon) so we’ll have to see on my next trip.

I think a little cup like that could work well. I went with the Pivot Spoon because it only weighs about 1 oz and it packs away nicely. Some other folks had good ideas, here as well.

I’m a fan of bamboo ladles and spoons (usually quite inexpensive at Asian grocery stores/markets), but yeah, if you already bring a cup, that would make sense to use.
