True Liberty Bags- A cheaper alternative to Opsaks?

I’m needing to buy some odor-proof food bags, but I wanted to check for any cheaper (but functional) alternatives before I went ahead and purchased some Opsaks. I saw that a few people were using fumigation bags (nylofume, etc) a couple years ago, but things aren’t as readily available online for folks up here in Saskatchatoon.

I came across these True Liberty “odor-resistant” Food/Oven/Freezer/Garden bags on Amazon.ca. Any thoughts? I don’t mind paying for Opsaks if these aren’t legit, but I figured I’d check.

I’m not so sure…  When they talk about odor control they seem to be talking about cooking odors, and we humans have a less sensitive sensor than most bears.  And the picture looks like it uses a twist-tie.

Have you actually used these, Ed?  Do they seal some other way?

I know “they” use those turkey bags with success in the transportation of marijuana. Very popular in Humboldt County. Twist tie doubled over. If you remember the drug dogs gave the Aloksaks failing grades here a few years back with Ike’s article and test. Ive used them for carrying ground coffee and it does not leave my oatmeal tasting like coffee packed in another bag like what happens when using regular ziplocks.

I would not hesitate to use them again. I haven’t had any bear issues. My food does not seem to attract any attention. Give them a try.

Thanks for the input, guys! I just might give these a go. My one hesitation is that like Dean said, it looks like a twist-tie closure instead of a ziplock seal. The inner debate continues…

Bears have a much better sense of smell than dogs. A dog can smell thru OPSacks. I would not bother with them except as a water proof bag. Then there are much cheaper options.

Anyone try the OdorNo bags?  20 count of 13 gal size for ~$13.

Good ol ziplocks and common sense for me…. I never believed odor proof sacks were worth the money, and the report here on BPL about the dogs not detecting any difference at all just validated it.

How you gonna keep odor molecules off the outside of that bag? You handled food before you put it inside it.

Dogs are used to find drowning victims under water, can find human remains that are hundreds of years old, can find an odor proof bag full of drugs reliably despite their being carefully handled to avoid contaminating the outside of it with smells — bears have much better noses.

Just like all the people who think they hung food well enough to keep the bears from it, the method only works if the bears actually came by and chose to attempt to find the food. If the thing is supposed to keep food from bears, and the bears don’t show up, that doesn’t mean it works. It means you were dead lucky.
