Companion forum thread to: Timmermade SUL 1.5 Down Sweater Gear Review
The Timmermade SUL 1.5 Down Sweater is a down jacket with an excellent warmth to weigh ratio for ultralight backpackers.

Apr 5, 2025 at 3:04 pm #3832805Hi, comparing the Timmermade SUL 1.5 Down Sweater with Montbell Plasma 1000 Alpine Down Parka: is there any difference in warmth?
Apr 5, 2025 at 5:27 pm #3832810Excellent review, Iago. Objective numbers and subjuctive field experience are The Way. Anyone looking for winter insulation should read this review.
Your basis of comparison with other jackets is super. Basically an Ideal World comparison. Thank you for taking the time to write a comprehensive review.
Apr 7, 2025 at 5:27 pm #3832920Sandy, I have the P1k Parka but never a Timmermade.
None the less I’m confident that the SUL is warmer because the P1k has an awful baffle pattern. The excessive sewn thru seams on the p1k leads to a lot of cold spots. Also the seams mean less area is fully lofted compared to the SUL.
Cold spots can be mitigated to a decent extent by layering an oversize wind shirt over the jacket. I always bring an oversize Dooy to throw over the p1k and for general windshirt use
@Iago, how is the sizing? Any timmermade garment I see on the secondary Market is NIB because the fit wasn’t right (always too small). What size do you wear in mainstream brands, what size timmermade, and how does the fit compare?
Is any particular measurement goofy? Like, short arms, tight chest, small bicep, short length, etc?
Apr 9, 2025 at 8:07 pm #3833019I apologize for the late replies. I did not get thread updates.
@Bill, thank you for the compliment!
@Marcus, sizing can be a challenge. I submitted the review to BPL about a year ago after several months of testing. At the time of ordering, custom sizing was not an extra charge. I remember I compared the “standard” size measurements, and one parameter or another was not a fit for me. Their L or XL size at the time did not match up with REI, Patagonia, Outdoor Research, Mountain Hardwear or any other mainstream outdoor brand. I can see how their sizing can be perceived as “goofy”. I do not know whether Timmermade has changed their “standard” sizes since I did the review, but I can see it being an issue with customers. If one decides to go the custom route, Timmermade provides guidance on how to take measurements here. I recommend following the process at least twice. Annotate the measurements the first time, take a couple of days off, and then repeat the process from scratch without looking at the original numbers until you are done. Compare numbers and see if anything needs to be rounded up. The only fit element I am not completely happy with is the forearm to be honest. It’s a hair tight, but really only a hair, and it has not been an issue layering as I expected it to be, which is why I did not put it in the review.
Btw, I had previously purchased two garments in early 2021 from Timmermade, an argon windshirt and an alpha direct hoodie. I also had to follow the custom size option. The alpha hoodie has my preferred neck closure of the several alpha hoodie we have as a family. All three garments are very well crafted. And Timmermade was great to work with.
