I plan on renting an intermediate size car by the Denver Airport and driving into Big Sandy Trailhead for Labor Day Weekend. Google maps is estimating about a 7 hr 40 min drive. Given it entails some dirt roads curious if these driving times are accurate? Also, any recommendation which route to take from Farson? It looks like the 54.1 mile route has more dirt road section versus the 69.8 mile route.

Denver Airport to Farson 382 miles – 5:43 (averaging 67 mph)

Farson to Big Sandy Trailhead – about 2 hr (averaging 27-35 mph)

Al, you might want to contact the Forest Service office in Pinedale as they should have recent local reports on those roads:

As a slightly longer but more scenic option, you could drive N from Rawlins WY to Muddy Gap on 287, then pick up hwy 28 over South Pass. This route goes through some of the best sage brush country in WY IMHO:

I don’t have information on the roads from Farson to the trailhead, but did you consider Salt Lake City for your airport?  It’s 211 miles to Farson vs 387mi. from Denver.

Sure did consider Salt Lake City. I live in South Florida and there are cheap direct flights to Denver but not Salt Lake City.
