On a recent trip to Desolation Wilderness I witnessed one of the more dramatic skies I’ve seen in the backcountry. I was camped on a small rise above the northwest shore of Dicks Lake right off of the PCT.

Outstanding Pictures! Thanks for posting.
Desolation Wilderness is such a great name because it makes it sound like it sucks. I wonder if that keeps a small percentage of people away…
Gorgeous photos.
Really nice! And I see you were experiencing a bit of snow up there, too.
Sweetness!! Thats awesome and i can imagine the euphoria you must have felt actually witnessing it before your eyes.
WOW!!
Matthew, Unfortunately, I don’t think the name is keeping anyone away. I don’t know if it’s still the case, but in the past Desolation was the most visited designated Wilderness areas in the US.
Paul, Plenty of snow still and Dicks Pass looked a bit intimidating with a full chute of it, but it turned out to be fine.
Dirtbag, It came out of nowhere, too! It was about 5:30 a.m. and I got up to pee real quick planning to jump back in my bag to sleep in, but when I unzipped the tent and saw the sky, I grabbed my phone and started snapping pics in my long undies. Then, it started to sprinkle on me and out came a rainbow.
Thanks, everyone.
